JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Teacher - Special
REPORTS TO: Principal
Professional DutiesA teacher shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including planning, teaching, assessment, reporting and guidance as directed by the school and employing authority.
Roles and Responsibilities1) Exercise of general professional duties and
2) Exercise of particular duties – duties as reasonably directed by the principal, school, or employing board.1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons; 1.2 Teaching the pupils according to their educational needs; 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
2. General duties – promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils; providing advice and guidance; maintaining records; communicating with parents; coordinating with external bodies; participating in meetings.
3. Assessment/Reporting – contributing to oral and written assessments and reports for individual pupils and groups.
4. Staff Development/Professional Development – participating in staff development, reviewing teaching methods, pursuing further training, and advising on curriculum and teaching materials.
5. Discipline/Health and Safety – maintaining order and safeguarding health and safety; participating in curriculum and school administration meetings.
6. Public Examinations – preparing pupils for public examinations and recording/reporting assessments; supervising examinations as required.
7. Review and Development of Management/Administration – contributing to selection and development of staff; coordinating work of teachers; participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
8. Number of days/Hours of work – reference to annual days, hours and breaks as specified in terms of employment; availability to teach and perform duties as required by the Principal or Board.
9. Staff cover – supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable, subject to school size and policies; guidance on coverage arrangements. Includes standard note that the job description is subject to review and that the post-holder is expected to promote equality and good relations.

Essential Criteria – qualifications, teaching experience, safeguarding checks, and ability to work with pupils including those with Special Educational Needs; knowledge of NI Curriculum; ability to work with GTCNI registration and pre-employment checks.
Desirable Criteria – additional experience such as teaching in specialist provisions, IEPs, annual reviews, and related professional practice.
