Overview

VICE PRINCIPAL – Job Description and Terms and Conditions of Employment for Northern Ireland (as applicable). The Vice-Principal will deputise for the Principal when necessary and take an active part in all aspects of school life, in addition to a full-time teaching commitment and membership of the School Leadership Team.

Job Description – Vice Principal

The Vice-Principal will work within the agreed Terms and Conditions of Service for Vice-Principals. The duties include deputising for the Principal and playing a major role under the Principal’s direction in: leading learning through high standards of teaching and learning; promoting a positive child-centred culture; assisting the Principal in school administration, management and organisation; supporting School Development Planning, School Self-Evaluation and Staff Development;

curriculum coordination; data analysis; managing a key area of the curriculum; promoting positive behaviour and safeguarding; liaising with governors and link staff; financial administration including budget planning and monitoring; organizing timetables and rotations; maintaining links with parents; and assisting with major school events and extra-curricular activities.

  • Leading learning through high standards of teaching and learning, and promoting a positive child-centred culture.
  • Assisting the Principal in school administration, management and organisation, including policy development.
  • Assisting in leading School Development Planning, School Self-Evaluation and Staff Development.
  • Curriculum coordination across Key Stages; supporting teacher professional learning and collaborative practice.
  • Co-ordinating curriculum development, planning, benchmarking, target setting, performance reviews, and monitoring provision quality.
  • Analyzing key school data and reporting to the Principal and Governors.
  • Taking responsibility for a key area of the curriculum.
  • Promoting positive behaviour and implementing the school’s policies (Behaviour Policy, Anti-bullying Policy).
  • Senior Member of the Safeguarding Team and liaison with link governor for safeguarding; line management for classroom assistants.
  • Assisting with financial administration including budget planning, allocations, monitoring spend and reconciliations.
  • Assisting with development and maintenance of timetables and rotas.
  • Maintaining and promoting links with parents; assisting with major school events; responsibility for extra-curricular activities; lunch-time cover as required.

This job description may be amended after discussion with the Principal. The successful candidate will demonstrate relevant experience, knowledge and skills in key areas including shaping the future, leading and managing staff, leading learning and teaching, developing the school in the community, managing the organisation, ensuring accountability, and conditions of service.

  • Leading learning and teaching: develop effective learning culture; lead self-evaluation; analyze data to drive improvement; ensure NI Curriculum implementation and address pupil under-achievement.
  • Developing the school in the community: build relationships with parents and community; promote the school image; ensure effective communication channels; act on community feedback.
  • Managing the organisation: prioritise and organise; solve problems; make informed decisions; develop systems; implement School Development Plan; manage resources and equipment.
  • Ensuring accountability: foster accountability among Governors and staff; synthesize self-evaluation and external evaluations to improve the school; report to Governors.
