JOB TITLE:

REPORTS TO:

Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
  • Exercise of general professional duties
  • Exercise of particular duties:
    • A teacher not a principal shall carry out duties under reasonable direction of the principal and, if employed by a board, under board and principal direction.
    • When employed under a board not assigned to a school, duties may be assigned by the board or principal of any school where teaching is required.
    • Perform any particular duties reasonably assigned by the principal or board.
  • Planning:
    • 1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
    • 1.2 Teaching, including setting and marking work for pupils in school and elsewhere;
    • 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  • General:
    • 2.1 Promoting progress and well‑being of pupils and classes;
    • 2.2 Providing advice and guidance to pupils on education, social matters, further education and careers; giving information on sources of expert advice and making relevant records;
    • 2.3 Recording and reporting pupil personal and social needs, except where it might be a conflict of interest;
    • 2.4 Communicating and consulting with parents;
    • 2.5 Communicating and cooperating with approved external persons or bodies;
    • 2.6 Participating in relevant meetings.
  • Assessment/Reporting:
    • Providing oral and written assessments, reports and references, except where conflict of interest.
  • Staff Development / Professional Development:
    • 4.1 Participating in staff development and performance review schemes if required;
    • 4.2 Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; participating in arrangements for further training and professional development;
    • 4.3 Advising the principal and other teachers on course preparation and development, teaching materials, programmes, methods and assessment, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Discipline / Health and Safety:
    • 5.1 Maintaining order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety on premises and during authorised activities elsewhere;
    • 5.2 Participating in meetings on curriculum, administration or organisation, including pastoral arrangements.
  • Public Examinations:
    • Preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing them for the exams, recording and reporting assessments, and supervising examinations.
  • Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration:
    • 7.1 Contributing to selection and professional development of other teachers, induction and assessment of probationary teachers, coordinating or managing other teachers, and participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral function reviews;
    • 7.2 Participating in administrative tasks, supervising support staff, and ordering equipment and materials.
    • Subject to Article 22 of the Order, attending assemblies; registering attendance, supervising pupils.
  • Number of days / Hours of work:
    • 8.1 Full‑time teacher (excluding residential establishment) available for work on 195 days, not more than 190 teaching days per year;
    • A teacher (not residential) available to perform duties as directed for 1,265 hours per year, excluding off‑premises preparation, marking and travel;
    • A teacher may not be required to teach more than 25 hours per week in primary/special school and 23.5 hours per week in secondary school;
    • Unless under separate contract, no mid‑day supervision;
    • Break of at least 30 minutes between 12:00 and 14:00; in nursery schools 12:00–14:30;
    • Staff cover: supervising and teaching absent teachers under specified enrolment conditions.
