Professional Duties
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work done in school and elsewhere;
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils;
  • Promoting the general progress and well‑being of individual pupils and any class or group of pupils assigned to you;
  • Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers, including information about sources of expert advice;
  • Making records and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils, except where such reporting may compromise a teacher’s own position;
  • Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils;
  • Communicating and co‑operating with approved external bodies as authorised by the employing authority and Board of Governors;
  • Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above;
  • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups;
  • Participating in staff development schemes and performance review arrangements;
  • Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work from time to time;
  • Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as a teacher;
  • Advising and co‑operating with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, programmes of teaching, methods of teaching and assessment, and pastoral arrangements;
  • Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the employing authority and safeguarding their health and safety when on the school premises and during authorised activities elsewhere;
  • Participating in meetings at the school relating to curriculum, administration or organisation, including pastoral arrangements;
  • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations, recording and reporting such assessments, and supervising examinations;
  • Contributing to the selection, appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers;
  • Co‑ordinating or managing the work of other teachers;
  • Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties, including the management or supervision of support staff and allocation of equipment and materials;
  • Attending assemblies, registering pupil attendance and supervising pupils when required;
  • Being available for work on 195 days in any year, not more than 190 days of teaching in a classroom situation, and performing duties at times and places specified by the Principal, including travel and preparation time.
Essential Criteria – Section 1
  • Qualifications must be obtained at the date of taking up appointment;
  • Hold a teaching qualification recognisable for teaching in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland;
  • Minimum of 1 year demonstrable experience teaching Foundation Stage to achieve positive learning outcomes;
  • Demonstrable experience using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs;
  • Demonstrable experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning;
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice;
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice;
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils;
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies;
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching;
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement;
