Understanding how contaminants move through the ground and interact with groundwater systems is some of the most technically demanding work in environmental consultancy. It requires sharp analytical thinking, genuine hydrogeological expertise and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly to clients and regulators who depend on getting it right.
At Stantec, our Energy and Resources Group delivers exactly that kind of work across major energy, infrastructure, industrial and regulated-sector projects. We are looking for a Contaminant Hydrogeologist and Groundwater Modeller with extensive experience to join a strong, collaborative and growing team. If you are ready for a role where your technical depth is genuinely valued, and your career has real room to develop, we would love to hear from you.
AboutThe Role
You will be based in Edinburgh, Glasgow, High Wycombe, Birmingham or Shrewsbury, joining a team that works holistically across contaminated land, hydrogeology, groundwater modelling and ground engineering.
Your work will span the full project lifecycle: field investigation design, groundwater monitoring, hydrogeological interpretation, risk assessment, numerical and analytical modelling, and technical reporting. You will develop, refine and apply conceptual site models for soil, groundwater, surface water and ground gas assessment, and contribute to groundwater flow and contaminant fate and transport modelling across a varied portfolio of contaminated site projects.
You will liaise directly with clients and regulators, prepare hydrogeological and contaminated land risk assessments, and mentor junior colleagues as the team continues to grow. A willingness to travel to UK offices and project sites is required.
Your ImpactThe conceptual models and risk assessments you produce will directly inform how contaminated sites are understood, managed and remediated. Your technical judgement will help clients navigate regulatory processes with confidence, protect groundwater resources and deliver outcomes that leave land and water environments in a genuinely better condition.
The support you provide to junior colleagues will shape how the next generation of hydro geologists in the team develops, building the kind of practical, grounded expertise that only comes from working alongside someone who has done it properly.
About YouYou hold a degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline, with a relevant MSc or PhD, a welcome bonus though not essential. You bring years of relevant experience in hydrogeology, contaminated land assessment, groundwater risk assessment or environmental consultancy, ideally within a consulting environment.
Your technical toolkit includes experience in conceptual site model development, groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling, ground investigation design, and the assessment and consolidation of chemical and geological datasets. You prepare clear, well-structured technical reports and communicate findings confidently to clients, regulators and multidisciplinary project teams. Experience with ArcGIS would be a useful addition.
You are comfortable working across complex, multi-faceted projects, contributing your expertise within collaborative teams and bringing the sound judgement that high-stakes contaminated land and groundwater work demands.
