Champion Process Safety, Reduce Risk, Protect Our People

Avanti Gas is looking for an experienced Process Safety Engineer to champion process safety across our Seveso/COMAH sites throughout the UGI North Region, supporting our Process Technical Lead with licences and consents, and driving the innovation projects that reduce risk in our high-hazard operations.

We are looking for someone who can champion process safety standards and culture at every level of the business, drive continuous improvement, and provide honest, reasoned safety reporting - even where that means having difficult conversations.

The Opportunity

As Process Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for process safety across all Seveso/COMAH operating sites throughout the UGI North Region, working within a matrix organisation and reporting to the Process Technical Lead.

You will work within our regional Technical team, offering national coverage and supporting Region North where necessary. The role is based at our Head Office in Staveley, Chesterfield, with travel to operational sites and customer locations, and national and international travel will be required as the role demands.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Develop, define and publish our Process Safety suite of standards and approaches.
  • Carry out gap assessments and ensure compliance with Process Safety standards.
  • Generate, report and justify key performance and efficiency metrics for Process Safety.
  • Roll out Process Safety standards, training, buy-in and competency assurance at every level of the business.
  • Ensure high-hazard activities are suitably identified, risk assessed, documented, trained and audited, including Management of Change (MoC) procedures.
  • Maintain adherence to internal standards, policies and procedures, or provide robust justification to support derogation.
  • Support the regulatory intervention programme, communications and compliance.
  • Justify decision-making relating to risk reduction measures (ALARP) and maximise operational up-time, including process changes to support consenting activities.
  • Provide honest and reasoned reporting of safety incidents, even where conflict applies.
What We Are Looking For Functional:
  • Competent in the use of SharePoint, CRM, JDE and Microsoft packages.
  • Competencies A-E of the Engineering Council's UK-SPEC at Chartered Engineer (CEng) level, ideally gained through a recognised apprenticeship route, or working towards professional registration.
  • Functional safety qualification preferred; EC&I background desirable.
  • Practical risk management experience, with IOSH/NEBOSH desirable.
  • Full clean driving licence.
  • Knowledge and experience of the LPG/industrial gas industries.
  • Experience of Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), risk assessment, documentation and control.
Personal:
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills across all levels of the business.
  • Ability to guide and support stakeholders, particularly on projects, in the time-critical development of high-hazard sites.
  • Ability to create robust business cases and justifications to support investment in infrastructure.
  • Confidence in supporting the rationalisation of risk, hazards and approaches.
  • Driven to improve safety and futureproof our sites.
  • Demonstrable ability to influence, convince and argue for change.
The Rewards
  • Competitive salary (Job Grade
    4)
  • A genuinely influential role in shaping process safety strategy across the UGI North Region
  • Support towards Chartered Engineer status and professional registration
  • A collaborative regional Technical team offering national coverage
  • Opportunities for national and international travel
