DescriptionTeam Overview:
The Design department is responsible for developing innovative, practical, and fully coordinated mechanical and electrical building services solutions tailored to each project. Working closely with clients, project teams, and the BIM department, the design team transforms concepts into detailed, build-ready technical designs that meet regulatory standards, client specifications, and sustainability goals. Their work underpins the technical accuracy and efficiency of our installations, ensuring seamless integration from planning through to construction.
Role Overview:
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will help deliver the low‑carbon energy infrastructure that supports Alternative Heat’s commitment to decarbonisation. You will develop coordinated electrical designs for projects across healthcare, education, leisure and residential sectors, including LV distribution, load assessments, circuit design, plant power supplies, general and emergency lighting, metering, generators, transformers, and electrical interfaces with mechanical plant and BMS packages.
Working with the electrical, mechanical and BIM teams, you will produce calculations, schematics, schedules, and coordinated layouts from design development through construction and handover. Your work will contribute to safe, buildable, and energy‑efficient systems that reduce carbon emissions and support our clients’ decarbonisation objectives.

Responsible to | Head of Design
Responsible for delivering coordinated electrical designs from concept through to construction, commissioning and as‑built handover, including load assessments, cable sizing, voltage drop, fault current, protection and discrimination studies using Amtech or Electrical OM. Duties include conducting site surveys, developing LV single‑line diagrams, schedules, schematics and layouts, and specifying electrical systems such as switch gear, distribution boards, transformers, generators, cables and metering. The role also involves coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, controls, civil, structural and BIM, to resolve interfaces, equipment locations and service routes, as well as defining electrical interfaces with mechanical plant and BMS systems.
Additional responsibilities include reviewing standards and legislation, preparing technical documentation and risk assessments, responding to RFIs and technical queries, attending design meetings, and supporting clients and project teams through procurement, construction, testing and commissioning, with occasional travel to sites across the UK and Ireland.
