Environmental Advisor

Provides professional advice and guidance on environmental protection and compliance matters. This job ensures that operational, regulatory and organisational environmental standards are consistently met, contributing to the safe and responsible operation of facilities and projects in the nuclear industry throughout their entire lifecycle from construction and operation to decommissioning.

Environmental management and advice:

• Provide professional advice to management and staff on environmental matters, including interpretation and application of environmental permits and regulations, to support informed decision making and environmental protection.
• Provide input into the development of Sellafield Ltd (SL) environmental arrangements and standards to ensure effective environmental protection and compliance.

Environmental Impact Assessment:

• Prepare technical reports (e.g. BAT Assessments and Environment Cases) to identify, evaluate and mitigate potential environmental impacts, ensuring relevant authorisations and consents are obtained, to enable new projects or modifications to existing facilities.

Audit and Inspection:

• Undertake inspections, observations, and assurance activities (including oversight and assurance of the management system) to verify compliance with environmental standards and behaviours, and to identify environmental performance gaps and opportunities.
• Support the duty holder in the investigation of incidents and events, ensuring corrective actions are taken and learning opportunities identified and shared.

Data analysis, and performance reporting:

• Review and interpret environmental metrics and analyse data to identify performance trends, providing reports to management to inform and drive improvement, and to the regulator to maintain compliance.

Stakeholder engagement:

• Collaborate with facility operations teams, project teams and contractors to ensure environmental standards and expectations are integrated into design, construction, and operational activities.
• Act as a point of contact for all environment-related queries and support the Environment/EHS Manager and Duty Holders in interactions with external regulators and stakeholders (e.g. Environment Agency, LRQA), agreeing appropriate and proportionate ways to improve environmental performance and minimise regulatory risk to the business.

Continuous Improvement:

• Using the outputs from assurance activities and regulator correspondence, identify opportunities to enhance environmental performance and reduce risks across the organisation.
• Develop improvement programmes, benchmarking environmental performance against industry standards and adopting new technologies to enhance performance.

Education, awareness and mindset:

• Coach, mentor and where appropriate, assess Environmental colleagues and/ or Environmental role holders and those accountable for environmental safety to develop environmental competency.
• Lead by example in setting environmental standards, championing best practice and encouraging others to demonstrate appropriate behaviours, and promoting the development of a positive Environmental culture.
• Develop and deliver environmental education and training to employees & support the development of a well-informed workforce that understands its role in protecting the environment.

To provide advice and authorisations in accordance with any SQEP roles and nominations (See Environmental Competence Scheme), seeking advice and guidance from Environmental Specialists / SME’s where necessary.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM subject or an equivalent level of qualifications and experience.
• Member of a relevant Professional Body (e.g. ISEP (Practitioner or REnvP) etc.).
• Strong knowledge of environmental management systems, risk assessment methods, and hazard control techniques.
• Experience providing environmental compliance advice within in a highly regulated, industrial setting.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Analytical skills with attention to detail in documentation and reporting.

• Knowledge and understanding of Environmental challenges at Sellafield.
• Chartered member of a relevant Professional Body (e.g. ISEP, RSC etc.).
