About the Role

AECOM is looking for talented and motivated graduates to join our Highways and Streets practice across the UK and Ireland (UK&I). As the largest dedicated team within the practice in the UK&I, our Belfast team works on a diverse range of projects focused on creating safer, more efficient and sustainable transport networks for communities.

Our work covers the development and appraisal of practical solutions for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, including road and street design, traffic signals, cycle facilities, traffic management and traffic modelling. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and other technical professionals in multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions for our clients.

Projects range from concept and preliminary design through to modelling, detailed design and implementation, giving you the opportunity to gain experience across the full project lifecycle. The role is fast-paced and collaborative, requiring creativity, technical capability, strong communication and a willingness to learn.

What You’ll Do

As a Graduate Engineer, you’ll be supported by experienced engineers who will provide guidance and mentoring as you develop your technical knowledge and professional skills. You’ll work on live projects and receive structured training to help you build a strong foundation in traffic engineering and design.

Your initial responsibilities will typically include supporting the development of designs and technical solutions through different project stages, attending site visits, meetings and workshops, and working collaboratively with clients and other design professionals.

You’ll receive training in relevant engineering and design software, which may include AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and others, depending on project requirements. You’ll also develop your understanding of digital engineering and BIM processes.

As your experience and confidence grow, you’ll take on increasing responsibility for project tasks and technical deliverables, with opportunities to contribute to projects from inception through to completion.

You may gain experience across a variety of projects, including:

• Highway and street design
• Junction and intersection design
• Cycle lane and active travel design
• Bus priority and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) schemes
• Streetscape and urban improvement projects
• Feasibility studies and scheme development
• Road safety assessments and audits
