A midwife provides care and support to women and their families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Some roles and responsibilities you will undertake include:
- Monitor women and their babies during and after pregnancy
- Support women and their families, facilitating classes for pregnancy and parenting
- Manage labour and perform delivery of babies during birth
- Identify and manage risks to mother and baby

5. After completing a 12 to 18-month preceptorship, they immediately move to a band 6 salary, starting at £35,392. A consultant midwife on band 8b-8c can earn between £55,000–66,000.

Any midwifery university course or apprenticeship needs to be approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You could also volunteer to gain more relevant experience to support your university application.
