Backup and Recovery Engineer Job Overview:

The Backup and Recovery Engineer are a member of the Architecture Solutions team responsible for designing, administering, monitoring, and continuously improving enterprise backup, recovery, and data resilience services across on-premises, cloud, and software-as-a-service environments. This role protects the availability, integrity, and recoverability of the organization's systems and information by ensuring backup policies, retention schedules, recovery objectives, and restoration procedures align with business, operational, and cybersecurity requirements.

As Backup and Recovery Engineer, you will serve as a technical owner for backup platforms and repositories, manage daily operations, investigate failures, perform restorations, and maintain secure recovery capabilities designed to withstand system failures, human error, and disaster recovery events. This position partners closely with infrastructure, cybersecurity, application, database, and business teams to validate recoverability, support disaster recovery exercises, and improve enterprise resilience.

This is a full-time, on-site position at Evapco's corporate headquarters in Taneytown, Maryland. Very infrequent travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Administer, monitor, and optimize enterprise backup and recovery platforms across on-premises, cloud, virtual, database, file, and SaaS environments.
  • Configure backup policies, schedules, retention, replication, encryption, deduplication, repositories, and capacity to meet business and technical requirements.
  • Investigate backup failures and performance issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Execute and validate file, application, database, virtual machine, system-state, bare-metal, and point-in-time recoveries.
  • Define and maintain recovery objectives, restoration procedures, dependency maps, runbooks, and technical documentation for critical systems.
  • Conduct routine restore testing, disaster recovery exercises, and cyber recovery simulations; document results and remediation actions.
  • Design and maintain secure, resilient backup architectures using least privilege, multifactor authentication, encryption, immutability, offline copies, and geographically separated recovery data.
  • Support incident response, business-critical recoveries, change management, audit evidence, and compliance requirements related to backup and recovery services.
  • Track service health, capacity, recovery performance, and SLA attainment; coordinate platform upgrades, vendor support, licensing, and lifecycle planning.
  • Automate operational tasks and reporting, evaluate emerging technologies, and advise infrastructure and application teams on backup onboarding and recoverability.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • A minimum of three years of hands-on experience in enterprise backup and recovery, data protection, storage, systems administration, or infrastructure engineering
  • Demonstrated experience administering at least one enterprise backup platform such as Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, Cohesity, Datto, Dell Power Protect, or similar system
  • Experience supporting backup and restoration for Windows and Linux servers, virtualized environments, file services, databases, and cloud workloads.
  • Specific knowledge of on-premises solutions including NAS devices exposed by a SAN, snapshots, deduplication, file partitioning, and segmentation.
  • Working knowledge of backup architecture, retention, replication, recovery points, immutability, encryption, storage repositories, and data lifecycle management
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex backup failures and successfully execute restoration and recovery procedures
  • Familiarity with RPO, RTO, disaster recovery, business continuity, change management, incident management, and operational documentation practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams, vendors, and business stakeholders
