Our Environment business is a specialist division of Galliford Try, delivering essential infrastructure that keeps the UK's water and environmental systems operating efficiently and sustainably.

Procurement at Galliford Try

We're now looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Buyer to join our Procurement team, supporting the delivery of major infrastructure projects for Thames Water
. This is an excellent opportunity to build a long-term career within procurement while working alongside experienced professionals in one of the UK's leading construction businesses.

The Role

As an Assistant Buyer, you'll play an important role in supporting the regional procurement team, helping to source materials, plant and subcontract services across a diverse portfolio of projects.

Working closely with our Buyers, Senior Buyers, commercial teams and operational colleagues, you'll help deliver efficient procurement processes, develop strong supplier relationships and ensure our projects receive the right materials and services at the right time.

This role offers excellent on-the-job training and development, making it an ideal opportunity for someone looking to establish or grow their career within construction procurement.

What You'll Be Doing

As Assistant Buyer, you'll:

  • Support the procurement of materials, plant and subcontract services across Environment projects.
  • Obtain supplier quotations, evaluate proposals and raise purchase orders in line with company procedures.
  • Work closely with procurement, commercial and operational teams to review procurement schedules and secure best value for projects.
  • Support project teams with forecasting material requirements, managing lead times and monitoring supplier performance.
  • Assist with tender enquiries, tender analysis and procurement schedule reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with client framework agreements and Galliford Try's preferred supplier arrangements.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with suppliers by attending meetings, workshops and supply chain events.
  • Share best practice across regional procurement teams and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support innovation through digital procurement, carbon reduction initiatives and modern methods of construction, including off‑site manufacturing.
About You

We're looking for someone who is organised, proactive and eager to develop a career in procurement.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to build relationships with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A basic commercial awareness.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

It would also be beneficial if you have:

  • Previous experience within construction, engineering, infrastructure or a similar industry.
  • A positive, collaborative and proactive approach to work.
  • An interest in working towards CIPS accreditation and developing a long‑term career in procurement.
