The Safety Case Manager (SCM) will provide leadership and line management to a team of nuclear safety case advisors to manage (i.e. implement, maintain, review and withdraw) the Nuclear Safety Case in their business area as well as input into and support the development of Nuclear Safety Cases in their area in accordance with SEMS Area 2.6.3 ‘Manage Safety Case’ process arrangements, relevant legislation, good practice and business needs.

Accountabilities

On behalf of the Safety Case owner, will manage the Nuclear Safety Case to ensure Nuclear Safety, legal compliance and efficient and effective operations and project delivery throughout through all relevant lifecycle phases.

Provides expert advice and leadership in respect to Safety Case management issues to support continued operations and progress against project delivery.

Provides input and support to the development of Nuclear Safety Cases to ensure that a) the extant Safety Case is appropriately considered in the development of a new Safety Case and b) the Safety Case being developed is implementable.

Sponsors Safety Case documentation through appropriate governance routes to ensure delivery of the Safety Case in line with business and programme requirements.

Serving as the main contact with the regulator (supporting the Safety Case Delivery Lead and Development Team Managers on engagements when necessary) to ensure regulatory support and achieve permissioning for mission critical activities.

Leading on other stakeholder engagements to secure stakeholder support and build confidence in any proposed approach to ensure nuclear safety and efficient and effective operations and project delivery.

Seeks and shares learning internally to the profession, within the wider business and external to the business, to ensure continuous learning and improvement associated with Safety Case Management.

Maintains a broad awareness of business and profession drivers in order to ensure Safety Case Management approaches align with current business needs context and strategic drivers. Challenging approaches when necessary to achieve a Safety Case that best enables the mission.

Assists in the development, maintenance, assurance and optimisation of SL’s Nuclear Safety Case arrangements to ensure that arrangements reflect industry relevant good practice and are flexible enough to enable the mission going forward (for example- by providing learning, experience and technical opinion on the arrangements and at times, leading on the development of methods/ processes/guidance).

Supports the development and maintenance of the technical capability for their discipline to ensure a healthy pipeline of technical resources for the future (for example by acting as a mentor/ inputting in to training and briefing and advising on resourcing needs/ issues/ risks).

On behalf of the Safety Case Owner/Head of Safety Case (Delivery Pillar):

Act on behalf of the Safety Case Owner and Head of Safety Cases to implement, maintain, review, and withdraw Safety Cases.
Provide input and challenge to Business Areas and Programmes, influencing key decisions related to Nuclear Safety for projects and operations.
Hold team members accountable for delivering safety case activities to required quality, scope, time, and cost, in line with Sellafield Ltd Nuclear Safety Case arrangements.
Support the Safety Case Delivery Lead in supply chain engagement ensuring timely procurement and deployment of resources.
Verify safety case documents according to governance standards.
May act as SL’s ‘controlling mind’ for nuclear safety case delivery within delivery frameworks or partnerships (e.g., NNL), representing the Intelligent Customer.

Dimensions:

The position holder is recognised as a technical team leader who is required to engage with personnel at various organisational levels as well as with Internal and External stakeholders including Regulators.
