ASSIGNMENT

We are looking for a motivated, dynamic colleague with a broad view on classical studies to strengthen our education and research capacity in later Latin literature (medieval and/or early modern period). At Ghent University, the study of Latin literature, alongside Ancient Greek and several modern European languages and literatures, is housed within the department of Literary Studies. We teach Latin literature from the classical period through late antiquity to the Middle Ages, the humanist period and the later periods.

Ghent’s thriving Latin studies are part of the departments of Literary Studies, History, Linguistics, Philosophy and Moral Sciences, and Archaeology. Four research groups are actively cooperating in various specialisations: GIKS (Classical Studies), GCLA (Late Antiquity), Henri Pirenne Institute (Medieval Studies) and GEMS (Early Modern Studies).

We are looking for a colleague with a strong academic CV and international visibility in the required field.

The position, funded by the Special Research Fund, is granted the privilege of focusing primarily on research for a period of 5 years. During that period the teaching load will be limited to no more than 8 ECTS credits per semester on average over a period of 3 years. For the further development of the academic career, please see ‘Appointment information’ below.

You conduct innovative and internationally recognized research in the field of Latin literature, with a focus on a late period (medieval and/or early modern).

Academic education

You lecture various course units in the broad discipline of Latin literature and in particular the literature of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. In addition to Latin Literature at the bachelor’s and master’s level, your teaching duties may, in due course, include bachelor-level courses in cultural studies (the Latin tradition in Europe), theory and practice of translation, or language and reading skills.

Institutional

and societal engagement

Based on your expertise and experience, you will contribute to the university's operations and take on external assignments. You participate in the internal and external service activities of the Department of Literary Studies, the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, and Ghent University.

PROFILE Knowledge/experience
  • You have already conducted outstanding scientific research in the field of Latin Literature, as evidenced by high quality research output in national and international publications (journals and/or books) with a double-blind peer review.
  • The focus of your academic expertise lies in later (medieval and/or early modern) Latin literature, but you also work from a broader perspective and possess excellent knowledge of theories, methods, and debates in the wider fields of Classical Studies and Literary Studies.
  • You are capable of initiating and supervising educational and research projects and of acquiring the necessary funding for this.
  • You possess proven teaching experience and skills aimed at developing and strengthening academic competencies in university students.
  • You show leadership potential/have leadership experience. More information…
