MASH is the University’s mathematics and statistics help provision as part of the Mathematics Resources Centre. We provide daily drop-in support for all students, dedicated sessions for Year 1 students studying Mathematics modules and statistics advice appointments for both students and staff.

MASH Senior Peer Tutors (Statistics) will use their flexible and mature statistical knowledge and experience to provide support to students either in drop-ins or in statistics advice appointments.

Particular assigned duties will depend on your statistical background but will include some of the following:

  • Supporting students with statistical queries from any subject area.
  • Collation of resources and resource creation.
  • Meeting with individuals or small groups of students to provide support on data collection, data organisation and data analysis.
  • Developing statistical skills in students and in the team via training, feedback and advice.
  • Using your mature statistical knowledge and experience to help deal with difficult queries, helping others to step back and see the bigger picture by consolidating knowledge across topics.
  • Liaising with other team members and academic staff.
  • Supervising small teams of peer tutors where appropriate and necessary.
  • Briefing other members of the team during changeovers.
  • Promotion of the service.
  • You will be based at the University of Bath. Support and guidance will be given by core members of the MASH team but you will be responsible for carrying out appointments and providing statistical support without assistance.
Essential skills and qualities
  • Due to the nature of this position, you must be able to provide statistical support to students on any degree. You will have the equivalent of a 3 year degree in a programme with substantial statistical content, and will be experienced in applied statistical, or data, analysis (perhaps as part of a placement year or your current research). You will have a masters or PhD qualification or be working towards one.
  • Fluency in at least one statistical package(e.g. SPSS, R, Stata, Minitab).
  • Previous experience of tutoring, or similar.
  • Ability to quickly synthesise information given by students or staff and to provide evidenced advice on the appropriate analyses to perform etc.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good time management and awareness of working to a tight time limit.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Leadership qualities including effective delegation, confidence and a positive attitude.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Initiative to develop own ideas.
  • Trustworthy.
