Overview

Depending on the needs and on the number of pupils, the European School Brussels I (EEBI) – Berkendael site – is recruiting an:

Educational Support Assistant and/or Nursery Assistant

Nursery and/or Primary Cycles

English and Latvian Language Section

Part-time – Hours depending on the needs

Fixed-term contract

EEBI is part of the European Schools system and provides education for children whose parents work for the European institutions. Our school community is made up of about 4,250 pupils of 60 nationalities and over 500 staff members from Member States and beyond. Pupils are taught in twelve main language sections. Job description of an Educational Support Assistant

As an Educational Support Assistant, you play a key role in supporting pupils with special educational needs, ensuring their well-being, inclusion in school and success. Your main tasks are focused on three areas:

1. Nursing and care
  • Ensuring the pupils’ health, safety, and comfort, enabling them to participate fully in the school environment.
  • Provide direct physical care, including assistance with mobility, toileting, feeding, and medical procedures as required.
  • Monitor and support pupil’s health and well-being throughout the school day, including activities outside the school premises.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, parents, and school staff to develop and implement individualised care plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of care provided and any health-related incidents.
  • Ensure the safe use and maintenance of any medical or mobility equipment.
2. Pedagogical responsibilities
  • Provide personalised educational support in class, in small groups or individually, to meet the specific needs of pupils.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of differentiated teaching, in collaboration with teachers, to promote inclusion and success for all.
  • Assist in the preparation and use of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Use assistive technologies and appropriate teaching tools to facilitate learning.
  • Promote the integration of students into normal school activities by encouraging positive interactions and peer support.
  • Implement strategies to encourage positive behaviour and manage complex situations in the classroom.
  • Monitor pupils’ progress, document successes and difficulties, and share observations with teachers.
  • Support pupils' social and emotional development by creating a caring environment and leading activities that build self-esteem, social skills and resilience.
3. Collaboration, communication and professional development
  • Work closely with educational teams and healthcare professionals to ensure consistent and appropriate support.
  • Actively participate in student monitoring and assessment meetings in order to adjust intervention plans.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to develop skills and share best practices with colleagues.
Description of function of a Nursery Assistant

The role of a Nursery Assistant involves supporting the nursery teacher in all activities, helping to create a nurturing and engaging environment for young children. Responsibilities include supervising group activities, organizing materials for craft projects, and ensuring games, books and school supplies are clean and well-maintained. Duties also extend to supervising children during recreation periods, accompanying them to the restroom, supervising naps and providing practical assistance with snacks during breaks.

Administrative tasks may also be assigned by Management as needed.

Profile
  • Diploma:
    The candidate must hold a diploma or other qualification suited to carry out this function in the national system.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ professional experience in supporting pupils with special educational needs and/or as a teaching assistant.
  • Collaborative ability with the class teacher to support pupils’ needs in daily routines.
  • Excellent command of the language required for the section concerned.
