The Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences is opening a full-time position in Moral and Social Philosophy.
The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Department of Philosophy, Ethics, and the Sciences of Religions and Secularism, as well as with the Philosophy Research Center (PHI), where he/she will conduct research in the field of moral and/or social philosophy.
In addition to teaching at the Bachelor's and Master's levels, the candidate will supervise dissertations and doctoral theses in philosophy.
The selected candidate is also expected to take an active part in the administrative responsibilities of the Department of Philosophy, Ethics, and the Sciences of Religions and Secularism, including serving as Chair or Vice-Chair of the Department.
Area of Research:
Social Philosophy/Moral Philosophy
The successful candidate will primarily conduct research in the field of social and/or moral philosophy, understood in a broad sense and open to a wide range of approaches and topics.
An openness to interdisciplinary dialogue—particularly with sociology, anthropology, economics, law, social psychology, moral psychology, or history—would be considered an asset.
Educational and scientific goals :
The successful candidate will contribute to the initial training of philosophy students by teaching courses at the Bachelor's and Master's levels and by supervising Master's dissertations and doctoral theses.
He/She will develop a strong research agenda in the areas covered by the chair and will actively work to build robust national and international research networks.
Courses coveredat the time of recruitment :
Starting in the academic year 2026–2027:
- PHIL-B525 Seminar in Social Philosophy (24 hours). Master's-level seminar (MA1 and MA2) in Philosophy.
Starting in the academic year 2027–2028:
- PHIL-B250 Moral Philosophy (36 hours). Undergraduate course (BA1) in Philosophy.
PHIL-B300 Seminar on Philosophical Issues (36 hours). Undergraduate seminar (BA3) in Philosophy. This course is assessed, in particular, through the writing of a 25- to 30-page paper by each student.
A course or seminar at the Master's level in Philosophy, to be created by the successful candidate, and designed to usefully complement the existing course offerings of the Department as a whole.
Depending on the needs of the Department, and as part of a reorganization of his/her teaching load (which may in no case exceed 120 hours/year), the successful candidate may eventually be asked to teach a Bachelor's-level course combining anthropology and philosophy.
Qualifications required:
PhD Degree (with doctoral thesis) in Philosophy or equivalent qualification.
Skills required
- A minimum of four years of academic experience (including the PhD).
- Postdoctoral experience and an outstanding academic record, with demonstrated research in the fields covered by the chair. Mobility outside the institution where the PhD was obtained (during or after the doctoral period) is considered an asset.
- If you are not fluent in French (level C1), an adaptation period may be granted. However, you must be able to teach in French by the end of the third year following your appointment. Institutional support will be available to assist you in learning the language.
