The Landscape Laborer performs various tasks related to landscaping and grounds maintenance to enhance the appearance and functionality of Thompson + Hanson’s clients as well as their own property grounds.

• Perform tasks involving physical labor sites.
• May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, and clean up rubble, debris and other waste materials.
• Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
• Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, or rakes.
• Load and unload planting material and machinery.
• Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes.
• Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners.
• Gather and remove litter.
• Water lawns, trees, or plants, using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans.
• Trim or pick flowers and clean flower beds.
• Rake, mulch, and compost leaves.
• Knowledge of how to prep beds and plant materials from large to small.
• Follow instructions given by crew foreman.
• Adhere to safety policies.
• Maintain high quality workmanship.

• Minimal education required; no prior work experience necessary.

The landscape laborer typically works outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain or snow, depending on the season. The company will notify employees if extreme weather conditions are unworkable for the day/week in advance. When weather permits, workers are exposed to outdoor conditions, including extreme heat or cold, at heights such as rooftops, and to sounds or noise levels that may be distracting or uncomfortable.

Landscape laborers may be exposed to herbicides, fertilizers, pesticides and related products, and to hazardous equipment. Risks include minor burns, cuts, bites or stings or exposure to bright lighting.

While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is regularly required to bend, twist, maintain balance, and perform repetitive motions such as standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, walking and running. The incumbent may be required to push/pull objects, bend or stoop to pick up objects, climb ladders, scaffolding and stairs, grasp or squeeze to hold onto railings or items, and move or lift objects up to 75 pounds such as large pots and equipment or multiple plants.

The incumbent is expected to also be knowledgeable in using tools such as lawn mower, rakes, pruners and shears, hedge trimmers, weed whackers, blowers, power saws (chain and pruning), hand or power tools, tillers, spreaders such as mulch, rotary, and sand, wheelbarrows and wagons.
