Reporting to the Health & Wellness Manager, the Registered Staff (RPN) provides professional nursing care to residents in a retirement home setting in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. The RPN collaborates with other healthcare professionals, caregivers, and support staff to promote residents' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. This role is central to delivering safe, compassionate, and person-centered care tailored to the unique needs of older adults.
Duties and Responsibilities  
1. Resident Care   Deliver direct nursing care to residents, including medication administration, treatments, wound care, and monitoring of chronic conditions.
Conduct routine assessments and document changes in residents' health status.
Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
Respond promptly to emergency situations and initiate appropriate interventions.
Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and applicable regulations.
Monitor residents for side effects and interactions, and report concerns to attending physicians.
Maintain secure medication storage and inventory control.
Advocate for residents’ rights and preferences in care decisions.
Provide emotional support to residents and families dealing with illness, loss, or transitions.
Promote resident independence and dignity.
Oversee medication administration program.
Oversee admission and discharge of residents; make appropriate discharge plans.
Supervise resident person hygiene and bathing, per schedule, and assist when necessary.
Collaborate with volunteer and staff in the development and implementation of activity programs and outside services.
2. Clinical Documentation and Reporting   Accurately chart care provided and observations in resident health records.
Report any changes in resident condition to the appropriate personnel and family members as required.
Maintain compliance with documentation standards, including electronic health records (EHR) systems.
Ensure all medical records and personal health information is maintained per PHIPA.
Organize and review resident medications.
Ensure resident care plan is established and reviewed at least every six (6) months.
Complete and follow-up on incident reports when necessary.
3. Leadership   Provide direction and supervision to all care staff.
Monitor staff performance and complete performance evaluations during probationary period and on an annual basis.
Responsible for leadership coaching and mentoring to all Unregulated Care Providers.
Participates in staff development, quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control programs.
Ensure staff involvement in fire and safety procedures and communication to all staff of inspection reports and follow-up actions.
Ensures nursing documentation is complete as per College of Nurses’ Nursing Documentation guidelines.
Ensures there are sufficient staff on duty to provide the services which are offered and/or required.
4. Risk Management and General Safety   Partners with community team to ensure community is in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements and promotion of Risk Management programs and/or policies, adherence to safety rules and regulations.
Practices safety procedures at all times including personal protective equipment (PPE), fire safety procedures (extinguishers), safety data sheets (SDS), and lockout tagout procedures.
Reports all accidents and/or incidents immediately.
Reports all unsafe and hazardous conditions and/or equipment immediately.
Complies with all infection control techniques, placement of biohazard containers and removal techniques, procedures and policies.
Participates in fire safety and mock disaster procedures.
