Position: Parks Labourer

Department: Public Works and Environmental Services

Division: Parks and Outdoor Space

Reports to: Supervisor of Parks and Open Space

Public Works and Environmental Services

This department is responsible for the effective and efficient planning, engineering, maintenance, rehabilitation and operation of the municipal road system, parks and open space, solid waste management services, water treatment and supply, wastewater collection and treatment, stormwater management, development approvals and general engineering services.

Purpose and Scope:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Parks and Open Space the Parks Labourer will perform maintenance and other operational duties as required for the safe operation of community parks and sports fields. The duties will include, but notbe limited to, grass cutting, garbage/recycling collection, tent set-up, special event assistance, equipment operations, repairs and maintenance, landscaping,plant and lawn care, sports field maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The position will:

  • Ensure that a clean and safe work area is maintained including vehicles,equipment, building and storage areas.
  • Collect garbage and recycling items and dispose of same following

    Department procedures.
  • Grass cutting, weed whipping, wateríng and general grounds keeping dutiesas required.
  • Assíst with sport fields including dragging, grass cutting, lining, garbage pickup and field setup, e.g. bases, nets, etc.
  • Assist with tree work including trimming, loading and hauling brush and chipping.
  • Assist with playground equipment repairs.
  • Assist with community and special events including tent setup, lattice, fencing and staging.
  • Assist with facility maintenance such as winterizing buildings, repairing waterlines, etc.

Internal:
Supervisor of Parks and Open Space, Manager of Outdoor Operations, Parks Working Foreperson, Coworkers and other City Staff.

Education/Specialized Training/

Skills:

The position will require:

  • A minimum of a Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • A Class G driver’s licence and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Knowledge of special events operations.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as a truck, push mower, weed whipper, etc.

Nice to have:

Although not required, the following would be considered a preferred asset to the position.

  • Chainsaw Certification
  • WHMIS training
  • Basic First Aid/CPR
  • Propane Training
Work Experience:
  • A minimum of o ne (1) year of experience in parks maintenance is required. Demonstrated interpersonal and team skills are necessary.
Decision Making:

The position has minimal responsibility for decision making affecting the department.

Supervision:
  • Not applicable
  • Regular evening and weekend work is required.
