The Belleville Police Service is accepting applications for the position of Special Constable. This posting is to backfill an existing vacancy. Please review the job description below that details desirable qualities and skills required.
The starting salary is $73,863 and the top of the five-step grid is $87,877 (2026 rates of pay). This is a full-time position. Hours of work may be: 40-hours per week (Monday – Friday) or 46-hour blocks (two days on, followed by two nights on, and then four days off).
The successful applicant may need to work overtime, based on operational needs. 1. Perform duties in a manner that reflects the Service’s Vision, Mission Statement, and Motto.
2. Operate within the regulations, policies, and procedures established by the Police Services Act, the Community Safety and Policing Act, the Belleville Police Service Board, and the Chief of Police.
3. Comply with the Belleville Police Service LE-012 Search of Persons, LE-014 Court Security LE-014 A Court Security Plan, LE-016 Prisoner Care and Control, LE-033 Prisoner Transportation.
4. Assess and monitor all prisoner’s mental and physical condition upon arrival and throughout their custody at Belleville Police Service and at the Courthouse. Maintain visual and audible monitoring to ensure the security, care and control of prisoners by utilizing use of electronic monitoring equipment.
5. Present a positive image of the police service, community and the law at all times.
6. Apply appropriate use-of-force options and restraint techniques.
7. Assess security risks, provide appropriate security measures, and respond to panic alarms and emergencies within the court house.
8. Maintain the public peace, security, and decorum of Provincial, General Division, Young Offender, Family and Immigration Courts and for public areas within court buildings; search court facilities and liaise with Belleville Police Service officers as required.
9. Collect court ordered DNA samples/endorsements and all associated documentation pursuant to the DNA Identification Act (Bill S-10) and complete required internal documentation for tracking and submission to the National DNA Data Bank (NDDB).
10. Notify Court Services Supervisor / Officer-In-Charge of all instances in which a prisoner is classified as a high risk and in cases of emergency e.g. sickness, prisoners harming themselves.
11. Search courtrooms, cells, and all adjoining areas daily, to ensure a safe and secure environment.
12. Search and secure prisoners prior to transport and supervise them prior to and during court appearances.
13. Transport prisoners to and from lock-up facilities and elsewhere in the Province of Ontario as required by the judicial process.
14. Execute emergency procedures, including fire evacuation, medical response, high risk movement and care of prisoners.
15. Perform front desk duties at the Station.
16. Perform Bail duties by organizing and communicating all relevant information pertaining to the Bail hearing process.
18. Assist the Court Clerk by serving documents on in-custody persons.
19. Perform other duties as needed including searching for missing persons and traffic duty for special events, Scene security and Hospital prisoner care and control.
