This is an ambulatory role in our Illinois office, with the primary location in Illinois and potential to support patients on the main Wash U Medicine Campus. Clinics are located at Shiloh Memorial Hospital and Belleville Memorial Hospital. The NP will support both Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery patients under the direction of a thoracic or cardiac surgeon.

A cardiothoracic surgery outpatient nurse practitioner (NP) manages patients in a clinic setting, providing pre‑ and post‑operative care, conducting exams, interpreting tests, and developing treatment plans under the supervision of a surgeon.

40 hours per week – 8‑hour days. No holiday or weekend requirements.

• Provides direct patient care: obtains patient history, performs assessment, orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic studies.
• Performs preventative health assessments, screenings, immunizations and care; provides direct treatment and management of acute and chronic disease conditions.
• Develops and implements patient‑centered plan of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, consultants, nurses, ancillary care providers and others as appropriate.
• Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources; may perform diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations.
• May bill for services covered by collaborative practice agreement.
• Provides counseling and education of patients and families concerning preventative health, treatment options and community resources.
• Monitors and ensures accuracy of patient medical records; maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
• Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with clinic and hospital standards.
• Provides management services for clinical research study projects; monitors participating subjects including medication administration and family/patient education.
• Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Participates in continuous quality improvement and process improvement activities focused on providing exceptional, evidence‑based patient care.
• Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in‑service meetings and workshops.

• Normal office environment, exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, chemicals, protective devices, dust, dirt, grease; direct patient care setting.

• Typically sitting at desk or table, standing or walking, bending, crouching, stooping; occasional lifting (25 lbs or less).

• Office equipment, lab/research equipment, clinical/diagnostic equipment.

Required Qualification
: M.S.N. – Master of Science in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner.
