Primary Function: The Academic Advisor (Student Coach) assists students to complete their degrees and achieve educational goals through advising, progress tracking, and liaison services. The role focuses on building strong relationships, delivering student services, and identifying financial resources.
Essential Functions- Coach students on academic, career and personal issues; identify appropriate educational and career options and help analyze outcomes.
- Identify financial needs, explain financial planning, aid and scholarship applications.
- Engage students via in-person appointments, mail, telephone, video, email and digital media.
- Implement departmental communication plan with timely student contact.
- Support students’ self-reliance and goal-setting.
- Maintain student records and assist with degree planning, scheduling and registration.
- Guide students through complaint resolution.
- Use university assessment feedback to improve service.
- Collaborate with faculty and departments to resolve academic issues.
- Explain Bellevue University policies and procedures.
- Complete annual federal student aid e-learning modules.
- Work with financial aid office to process aid packages.
- Guide students in estimating costs and creating budgets.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Participate on committees and professional conferences.
- Adhere to confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Maintain student-focused philosophy.
- Apply knowledge of laws such as FERPA.
- Experience advising or higher education work preferred.
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficient with MS Office.
- Excellent customer service orientation.
- Knowledge of coaching practices preferred.
- Skill in student financial counseling preferred.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Demonstrate time management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and multitasking.
- Frequent face‑to‑face, online, phone, video, email interactions with students.
- Typical office environment.
- Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
