HDR is seeking a Dam Safety Engineer/ Subject Matter Expert to join our Hydropower Practice. HDR is a hydropower and dam safety industry leader. We are expert FERC Part 12 Dam Safety Program practitioners and perform FERC Comprehensive Assessments (CAs) and Periodic Inspections (PIs). We seek Subject Matter Experts in Civil, Hydraulics/Hydrology, Structural, Geotechnical, Geological, and Mechanical engineering. HDR offers hybrid or flexible work locations across the country.
Primaryduties
- Support inspections and engineering assessments of existing dams and water retaining structures.
- Conduct analyses, evaluations and designs; develop design options or recommendations with supporting calculations.
- Prepare contract documents including drawings, specifications, design documentation and criteria, and cost estimates for new or rehabilitated hydraulic structures (dams, spillways, gates, outlet works, diversion structures, retaining walls, flood walls, water conveyance structures, foundations, etc.).
- Perform engineering assignments requiring critical thinking and creative approaches where specific code guidance may be limited.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams on hydropower, pumped storage and dam safety projects.
- Work independently as project engineer and provide oversight, QA/QC and mentorship as needed.
- Participate in risk assessments for dams and hydraulic structures.
- Some travel is required.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Geological, or Geotechnical engineering (or related engineering degree).
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil/Structural, Hydrology and Hydraulics, Mechanical engineering, or life safety and economic consequence estimation.
- Experience with dams, water conveyances or other hydropower infrastructure, regulated by FERC or other agencies.
- Experience in a multi-discipline environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and/or Micro Station.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and with a project team to task completion.

- Ability to travel as needed for inspections, meetings or other requirements.
- Experience specific to the hydropower industry, including:
- FERC dam safety regulatory process experience (DSSMPs, DSSMRs, STIDs, Part 12D dam safety inspections).
- FERC dam safety assessment, analysis, and design experience.
- Hydropower design experience related to dams, penstocks, intakes, powerhouses, and retaining structures in hydropower facilities.
- FERC SQRA facilitation training/experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- 7 years related experience
- Minimum 2 years project management experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- MS Office and MS Project experience (Access a plus)
- Demonstrated leadership skills

The compensation range for this position varies by location. Washington: $101,812 - $176,065;
California: $117,887 - $199,030;
Colorado: $117,887 - $168,410;
New Jersey: $132,262 - $205,375;
New York: $107,170 - $191,375;
Ohio: $107,170 - $153,100;
Connecticut: $117,887 - $168,410;
Maryland: $112,529 - $160,755;
Minnesota: $112,529 - $176,065;
