Pay: $52-85/hour based on experience. Hot job! Actively interviewing!

Overview

This role will be a part of a high-functioning team of engineers focused on materials engineering challenges for next-generation materials and components for molten chloride fast reactors (MCFR). You will be an integral part of the MCFR program, providing valuable materials insight and supporting plant-level decisions on material selection through developing a thorough understanding of candidate materials in this extreme environment.

The candidate will participate in both laboratory-based work in Everett and office-based work in Bellevue
. Remote work is not permitted
.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and oversee material testing and irradiation campaigns for candidate molten chloride fast reactor materials with internal and external collaborators.
  • Plan and oversee post‑irradiation examination (PIE), testing, and characterization campaigns with external partners.
  • Evaluate and analyze material testing, irradiation, and characterization data to provide inputs for reactor design.
  • Develop test requirements, plans, specifications, and procedures for testing metallic materials in high-temperature molten salt environments and under irradiation.
  • Assist in planning and participating in test programs for environmentally assisted degradation of candidate materials (e.g., corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, irradiation‑assisted degradation, environmentally assisted fatigue, creep).
  • Interface with project teams (mechanical design, testing, radiochemistry) to ensure material development and testing efforts meet program objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with external partners, collaborators, and suppliers for material testing and development projects.
  • Maintain project schedules and deliver results to internal and external stakeholders on time.
  • Conduct laboratory testing and material characterization.
  • Provide materials engineering support for procurement of engineered components and systems.
  • Assist in procurement of materials, equipment, and testing services, including authoring procurement requisitions and managing supplier performance.
  • Perform scientific analysis on test data and generate technical reports documenting new knowledge related to material performance, reactor design, and material qualification.
  • Provide material selection guidance and documentation supporting materials selection.
Qualifications
  • Materials Engineer: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD
  • Senior Materials Engineer: Bachelor’s degree with minimum 6 years of related experience;
    Master’s with 3 years; or PhD
  • Principal Materials Engineer: Bachelor’s degree with 15+ years of related experience;
    Master’s with 8+ years;
    PhD with 5+ years
Requirements
  • Required: Experience in material development, testing, and characterization for nuclear research or industry applications.
  • Required: Proficiency in experimental techniques for material testing and characterization.
  • Required: Experience working with molten salts
    .
  • Experience in materials characterization (SEM, TEM, hardness, tensile, fracture analysis, corrosion testing).
  • Understanding of metallurgy, including fabrication and thermomechanical processing of nonferrous (nickel-based) and ferrous (stainless steel) alloys.
  • Knowledge or exposure to neutron irradiation effects on metallic materials and/or post‑irradiation examination (PIE) is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of non‑aqueous corrosion and environmentally assisted degradation mechanisms is desired.
  • Knowledge of material aging mechanisms in nuclear reactors and other extreme environments is desired.
  • Proficiency in writing technical documentation, including test reports and studies.
  • Experience writing specifications for materials, testing, and fabrication.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience collaborating with external project partners, collaborators, and suppliers.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Section III Div. 5 is highly desired.
  • Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA‑1 is preferred.
