Job Summary
Assist store management with operations by performing clerk duties in the designated department (grocery or freight). Lead by example, assist the department manager, answer customer questions professionally, and ensure fast, friendly service. Perform the duties of a grocery clerk, cashier, and/or freight stocker and assist employees in their tasks.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve, and thank customers, maintaining a friendly, enthusiastic customer service atmosphere.
- Provide customer service by performing clerk duties in the designated department (grocery or freight). Refer to the grocery clerk, cashier/checker, and/or freight stocker job descriptions for a complete list of responsibilities.
- Handle customer complaints and requests, approve checks, sell gift certificates, issue refunds, process returned check payments, and answer customer questions.
- Continuously monitor area activities, including customer traffic flow and checkout lane coverage.
- Maintain cleanliness and eye appeal of the work area, storage area, equipment, and retail displays according to company policy and legal regulations; mop, sweep, and dispose of garbage.
- Ensure the department/area of responsibility is free of excess carts, baskets, garbage, and other obstructions.
- Monitor employee arrivals, breaks, lunches, and departures, communicating with the immediate supervisor regularly.
- Assist the immediate supervisor as needed or directed.
- Assist clerks by providing direction and leadership, performing assigned tasks, and answering employee questions.
- Assist with cashier money handling procedures and scan system procedures, such as UPC code or price errors.
- Fill department racks/shelves, displays, and coolers; handle cleaning materials and department equipment; pull cardboard; face the wall and aisles; perform cashiering duties; perform any other duties as needed.
- Maintain constant awareness of customer and employee safety.
- Stock and rotate merchandise as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Requirements
- Education
:
High School Diploma or equivalent. - Experience
:- Communicating clearly and professionally, using excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrating leadership and composure when addressing difficult customers, vendors, or coworkers.
- Understanding overall company practices, policies, and procedures.
- Displaying initiative and self‑direction to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Conducting visual inspections and interpreting reports, register and computer screens.
- Performing basic math and calculating weights and measures.
- Executing primary duties accurately, honestly, and with integrity.
- Abilities
:- Consistently provide world‑class customer service to internal and external customers.
- Work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform all duties described in the appropriate department‑specific job description (grocery clerk, cashier, and/or freight stocker).
- Understand overall company practices through previous experience in a designated department.
- Properly use cleaning chemicals per manufacturer guidelines.
- Properly handle food products per state and county laws and Win Co standards.
- Lift and maneuver objects up to 50 lbs. frequently.
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently.
- Perform duties with mental alertness involving potential hazards with respect to procedures, machines, equipment, and work aides.
- Understand state and federal regulations if certification is required.
- Perform primary duties accurately and efficiently.
- Additional Requirements
:- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Food Handlers Certification (per state laws).
