Overview
Reporting directly to the Lead Design Engineer, the Senior Electrical Design Engineer will provide technical leadership within the Electrical Design function, overseeing the delivery of electrical design services across a diverse portfolio of projects.
The successful candidate will ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, regulations, and industry best practices while supporting the development of team members and driving continuous improvement and innovation. The role also provides technical support during tendering and procurement activities and serves as a key point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities Electrical Design- Lead and/or manage the development of electrical EPC and ICP system designs from preliminary through to detailed design stages, including:
- Equipment layouts and specifications
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Design schedules and associated documentation
- Lead and/or manage the completion of steady-state, dynamic, and grid code compliance studies.
- Oversee the selection and specification of electrical components, equipment, and materials.
- Ensure electrical engineering deliverables meet functional, safety, regulatory, and performance requirements.
- Ensure design outputs are delivered in line with project programmes and quality standards.
- Coordinate electrical and civil design interfaces to ensure full alignment.
- Resolve complex technical design challenges and provide specialist engineering support.
- Act as the principal technical authority for electrical design matters.
- Manage and support internal electrical design resources as well as external consultants and contractors.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and performance feedback to team members.
- Review and approve electrical design deliverables.
- Support training, professional development, and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Chair project-specific electrical design meetings and technical reviews.
- Provide technical input during tendering activities, including preliminary electrical designs and technical assessments.
- Support the development of project pricing and cost estimates.
- Define key equipment specifications in collaboration with procurement teams.
- Prepare scopes of work for subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
- Support tender evaluations, supplier selection, and contract award processes.
- Assist project delivery and commercial teams with electrical design-related change events and variation orders.
- Develop, maintain, and improve electrical design procedures and standards.
- Ensure compliance with document control processes, including formatting, naming conventions, approvals, and revision management.
- Promote and enforce the effective use of project management and document control systems across the design function.
- Identify internal and external resource requirements, including personnel, subcontractors, suppliers, and specialist consultants.
- Determine software, systems, and equipment requirements necessary for delivering high-quality design outputs.
- Work closely with the Lead Design Engineer to ensure appropriate resourcing for current and future project demands.
- Allocate and coordinate project workloads across the Electrical Design team.
- Provide regular updates and reporting to the Lead Design Engineer.
- Conduct and document performance reviews for direct reports.
- Coordinate design interfaces between electrical and civil engineering disciplines.
- Collaborate with commercial, procurement, delivery, and tendering teams to support project objectives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, and consultants.
- Lead the preparation and development of technical scopes of work.
- Support the resolution of technical and design-related escalations.
- Bachelor's degree (minimum) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in electrical engineering design within power, energy, utility, infrastructure, or related sectors.
- Strong understanding of UK electrical engineering standards, regulations, and industry best practice.
- Experience in electrical balance of plant design and associated infrastructure.
- Knowledge of UK Grid Code requirements and compliance processes.
- Familiarity with UK network operator standards and requirements.
- Strong project delivery and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites nationwide when required.
- Experience with electrical system modelling software such as DIgSILENT Power Factory, PSCAD, or similar.
