north lanarkshire council fleet is seeking an experienced and motivated fleet inspector to join our management team at bellshill fleet depot.
this is an exciting opportunity for a skilled vehicle maintenance professional to play a key role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of one of scotland's largest and most diverse local authority fleets.
as fleet inspector, you will take responsibility for overseeing daily workshop operations and maintaining the highest standards of vehicle compliance, safety, and maintenance performance. Acting as the lead technical authority on the workshop floor, you will supervise and support technicians, monitor productivity, and ensure all repair and inspection activities are completed to regulatory and operational standards.
a key element of the role will be driving continuous improvement in vehicle testing standards and taking ownership of the fleet's mot performance, ensuring vehicles are prepared, inspected, and maintained to achieve excellent first-time pass rates.
you will be responsible for:
- managing and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the workshop floor.
- ensuring all vehicle inspections, repairs, servicing, and maintenance activities are completed in accordance with dvsa standards and operator licence requirements.
- supporting fleet compliance by monitoring inspection schedules, maintenance records, and defect rectification processes.
- investigating mot failures, identifying trends, and implementing improvement measures to maximise mot pass rates.
- supervising and supporting workshop staff to achieve high standards of workmanship, productivity, and safety.
- working with fleet management systems and vehicle diagnostic equipment to monitor performance and compliance.
- assisting in the planning and allocation of workshop resources to ensure the effective delivery of fleet services.
- supporting the ongoing transition to alternative fuel technologies, including electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
- promoting a strong health and safety culture across all workshop activities.
you will be an experienced vehicle engineering or maintenance professional with a strong understanding of fleet compliance requirements, workshop operations, and vehicle inspection standards.
you will have the ability to work under pressure, prioritise workloads, and make informed decisions in a fast-paced operational environment. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential, together with the ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors, and stakeholders.
- educated to scqf level 7 in mechanics or equivalent qualification.
- inspector qualification.
- experience in vehicle maintenance, inspection, and repair.
- sound knowledge of dvsa, mot, and operator licence compliance requirements.
- experience supervising workshop activities and leading technical staff.
- competent in the use of fleet management and vehicle diagnostic systems.
- full uk driving licence.
working pattern:
day shift: monday to friday 6.30am to 2.10pm (30 min unpaid break)
back shift: monday to friday 1.50pm to 10pm (30 min unpaid break)
