Laser Operator

Role

The role of this position is to manufacture metal products using machines that employ lasers and computerized equipment. It is important that someone in this position always pays attention to the machine to ensure that it is working properly. They are responsible for the daily setup and operation of one or more CNC cutting machines. They will also assist other CNC operators with any of their daily duties including area housekeeping, maintenance work, part cleaning and material staging.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible to set up, operate, shut down procedures and maintain CNC lasers to produce parts using setup instructions, shop orders and prints.
  • Facilitate work-order paper flow in accordance with company quality standards.
  • Download laser programs and modify them, as needed, to optimize performance and part yield.
  • Locate and verify material required to produce parts per shop order, may recommend material sheet change to optimize part yield or to take advantage of drop-off material.
  • Enter machine settings for laser cutting operation to ensure correct lens, nozzle, assist gases and laser head are in place.
  • Monitor equipment performance throughout cycle to ensure optimal operation of laser and report to supervisor any maintenance needs.
  • Conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Inspect and measure parts to maintain quality records including verifying set-up piece and submission to Quality of 1st article for inspection or other required quality procedures.
  • Observe levels of assist gases, change tanks as required and recommend supply requirements for daily production.
  • Deburr parts or perform other secondary operations during machine cycle, when needed.
  • Stack or load finished items on pallets and route to correct next routing step departments.
  • Confer with supervisors or programmers to resolve machine malfunctions or production errors or to obtain approval to continue production.
  • Implement changes to machine programs, and enter new specifications, using computers.
  • Set up future jobs while machines are operating.
  • Clean machines, tooling, or parts, using solvents or solutions and rags.
  • Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Stage raw materials at each work-center for the day’s production.
  • Load and unload machines.
  • Maintain daily dust collector service and associated logbook in assigned area and report equipment deficiencies.
  • Ensure production schedule follow through as allocated by the scheduling department.
  • Assist in loading and unloading team members’ machines when production requires additional manpower to maintain throughput.
  • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of cutting equipment and work area in accordance with company standards and manufacturers' machine recommendations.
  • Perform some machine alignment procedures and optic cleaning to keep equipment at peak operating performance.
  • Make sure management is aware of any inventory items needed to reorder to maintain operation of machine.
  • Other duties assigned by Lead/Supervisor or Management.

Expectations

The role of this position is to know how to operate and set up machines. They ensure efficiency and correct operation of the machine. Whenever the machine malfunctions, they are able to bring it back into working order by using resources available to them. They make fast, accurate decisions relating to the production process and equipment. They should understand the details of the product to be manufactured, such as the product size and use.

Quality standards must be strictly adhered to, so attention to detail is extremely important. A laser machine operator may frequently use a chart to perform routine checks and maintenance on machines to make sure they are always in working order. Attention to time constraints is also important, as projects need to be completed in a timely and quality manner.

Employment Details

Full Time, Day Shift 6 am to 2:30 pm with overtime opportunities.

Required

Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Compensation: $15.00 to $25.00 /hour Dependent on Experience.
