Equipment Operator

As an Equipment Operator, you will perform a broad range of tasks involving the operation of heavy to light excavation equipment and the placement and burial of fiber pathways for the construction of telecommunications and Fiber‑to‑the‑Home (FttH) networks. You will also operate horizontal/directional drill rigs, locate equipment, and support related machinery.

• Operate excavation equipment for the installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
• Prepare construction sites for building, demolition, or excavation.
• Transport tools and other construction equipment to and from construction sites.
• Avoid existing cables and dig in accordance with blueprints and designated plans.
• Perform all duties according to prescribed safety procedures and use appropriate safety equipment.
• Set up and clean up the work site, including traffic and pedestrian control.
• Inspect and fuel the vehicle before beginning the shift.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs.
• Read utility locates and coordinate the lighting of these facilities.
• Ensure all applicable permits and locates are complete and on site.
• Inspect work in progress to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications.
• Operate construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
• Ensure sites are kept clean and safe.

• High school diploma or equivalent and at least one (1) year of experience. Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
• On‑job training offered. Must be available to work long periods, including evenings and weekends when necessary.

• Ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed.
• Ability to maintain all safety expectations.
• Works outdoors for extended periods and is exposed to extreme weather conditions.
• Prolonged periods operating heavy machinery.
• Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains.

• Extensive knowledge of heavy machinery operation and capabilities.
• Ability to read building plans related to structural concrete and land grades.
• Excellent mechanical skills.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to work as a team.
• Strong oral communication skills.
