Respiratory Therapists are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing care to our patients. Sanford Health is seeking a compassionate, patient, and problem-solving Respiratory Therapist to join our team as we strive to be the premier rural health system in the United States. Primary responsibilities for Pulmonary Function Lab RT are described below.
ResponsibilitiesPrimary Responsibilities for Pulmonary Function Lab RT
PFL Respiratory Therapist primarily performs diagnostic tests, which can include spirometry, diffusion testing, lung volumes, airway resistance, respiratory muscle forces, bronchial provocation testing, asthma exercise testing, exhaled nitric oxide testing, cardiopulmonary stress testing, home oxygen evaluations, six minute walk tests, arterial blood gases and other tests ordered by a doctor. In addition to testing, the PFL Respiratory Therapist may administer respiratory therapies and educate patients on the use of medications and equipment.
They must calibrate, clean and maintain diagnostic equipment and recognize when equipment malfunctions.
Secondary Responsibilities
PFL Respiratory Therapists spend most of their time performing noncritical testing. They must be prepared to respond during an emergency (e.g., CPR). They may be asked to cross-train in Pulmonary Rehab, serve as a student preceptor, assist during new-employee orientation, prepare the next day’s schedule and ensure orders are in the patient’s EMR.
QualificationsA degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited program is required; minimum associate degree or equivalent as defined by NBRC. Respiratory Therapists must have knowledge of procedures, indications, contraindications and hazards in respiratory care, and familiarity with department equipment. Must be able to utilize computers for patient documentation and data gathering. Must complete orientations, competency validations, and other in-servicing as required by the department and hospital.
Must have current Respiratory Therapy licensure in state(s) of practice and/or multi-state licensure; must have Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials per NBRC and maintain active status. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. Must obtain site-specific specialty credentials such as NRP, ACLS, PALS, etc.
