Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in providing legal services to indigent defendants charged with criminal offenses in district court, and to juveniles alleged to be delinquent in juvenile court.

Part-time attorneys are able to establish a private practice.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing cases for defense of indigent persons charged with criminal offenses in district courts, and handling dependency, neglect, or delinquency petitions in juvenile court.
  • Interviewing clients and prospective witnesses.
  • Preparing or overseeing the drafting of legal documents such as briefs, memoranda, pleadings, and other legal papers.
  • Conducting or directing legal research.
  • Representing misdemeanor, felony, or juvenile clients in court proceedings including arraignments, pre-trial hearings, trials, and dispositions.
  • Interviewing clients in custody and making initial decisions regarding bail, release, and mental competency.
  • Determining the need for expert witnesses, locating appropriate experts, and scheduling them for trial if needed.
  • Negotiating plea agreements with County and City Attorneys.
  • Consulting with social workers, probation officers, judges, and referees to determine appropriate treatment programs as part of defense strategy.
  • Advising and directing the work of law clerks.
  • Performing related work as required.
  • Qualifications include:

    • Good knowledge of criminal law and procedure.
    • Good knowledge of legal research and investigation principles, methods, and practices.
    • Good knowledge of judicial procedures and Rules of Evidence.
    • Good knowledge of court case presentation practices.
    • Ability to analyze legal documents and organize facts effectively.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with professionals, clients, and the public.
    • Good skills in legal research, data analysis, and presentation of facts.
    • Basic computer skills, including email and internet access.

    Education and licensing requirements:

    • Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the Minnesota Bar, or
    • Graduation from an accredited law school and certification under the Supreme Court Student Practice Rule (must pass the bar on first attempt).
