Hourly rate: $30/hour. This position is open for the academic year and will continue until filled. Position type:
Temporary PT Hourly.
The Forestry Technology Program seeks qualified individuals to serve as an Instructional Assistant. Assistants will assist the primary course instructor in the education of students in the lab experience.
- Assist during Forestry program course labs under the direction of the primary instructor, answering student questions regarding lab exercises, providing instruction in lab procedures, monitoring safety during labs requiring use of hand tools or power equipment, administering lab quizzes, grading of lab quizzes or assignments.
- Assist in development of lab and lecture exercises and curriculum under direction of primary instructor.
- Conduct layout of field lab exercises, checkout and inventory of equipment as needed. Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of lab equipment in the tool room or field.
- Conduct data entry and analysis of lab data.
- Respond accurately and appropriately to student questions.
- Provide instruction in lab procedures when needed.
- Administer and grade quizzes and assignments.
- Cooperate with other college personnel, including the primary instructor and program director in all aspects of the classroom and/or lab environment.
- Thorough knowledge in the field of Forest Resource Technology at the technician level.
- Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
- Visual ability, corrected, to enable assistant to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
- Familiarity with tools (both hand and power) that are used in forestry, including but not limited to diameter tape, relaskop/clinometers, increment borer, binoculars/spotting scopes, and chainsaw.
- Familiarity with and ability to operate or the operation of computers and other written materials, audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer-controlled mixed media presentations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
- Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Forest Resources Program Director and program staff and faculty on a regular basis.
- Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
- Ability to work with Forestry Program Director, faculty, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.
- Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
- Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
Required
- High School diploma or GED
- One year of coursework in Forestry or related field
Preferred
- AAS degree in Forestry or related field.
- Teaching experience in a Community College setting.
