Position Title:

Fire Science Lab Assistant (Part Time, Temporary Hourly, Non-Benefited)

Hourly rate: $25/hour

Primary

Purpose:

The Fire Science Lab Assistant is responsible to assist the paramedic course director in the education and evaluation of student performance in the lab experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with instruction in the EMT course lab under the direction of the EMT course director/faculty member.
  • Cooperate with other College personnel to assist students with career planning, job placement and follow‑up studies.
  • Perform other essential functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge in the field of fire science.
  • Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
  • Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
  • Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio‑visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer‑controlled mixed media presentations.
  • Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials.
  • Ability to verbally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Program Director, Paramedic Lead Instructor and other program staff and faculty on a regular basis.
  • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
  • Ability to work with faculty, Department Chair, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.
  • Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
Ergonomic Requirements

Regular office hours are established between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.

Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in extended standing with some occasional lifting. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Must be able to climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl and crouch. Requires writing, reading written materials and computer screens, and the ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience
  • One year of coursework in Fire Science or related field.
