Primary Purpose The Fire Science (FS) Program seeks a qualified individual to serve as Fire Equipment Assistant. This position will assist the FS Program Director in the office and classroom.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Fire Room in good order. (i.e., tools cleaned and put away promptly, etc.)
  • Willing and able to prepare instructional equipment and tools for instructional purposes.
  • Maintain and repair fire equipment as instructed.
  • Be alert to safety concerns and report to Fire Director immediately.
  • Secure doors of room when not in use.
  • Remain flexible with job tasks and shift hours to maximize the effectiveness of the program.
  • Routing cleaning of dedicated fire equipment.
  • Transport equipment between campuses/buildings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

  • Familiarity with tools and fire equipment that are used in Fire Science.
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Fire Program Director and program staff and faculty on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work with Fire Program Director, faculty, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
  • Must be able to take direction from all department staff members.
  • Able to analyze, organize, and complete transactions on a timely basis.
  • Must be flexible with job tasks and hours.
  • Must be able work with a diverse population and to interface with College staff and the public effectively and diplomatically, both in-person and on the telephone.

Ergonomic Requirements Standing is required 75% of the time. Occasional exposure to fumes and vapors. Must occasionally handle equipment that is over 100 lbs. On-going exposure to some carcinogens. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions without a significant risk of injury or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED.

Experience:

  • First‑hand, expansive knowledge of Fire tools & equipment.
