Purpose:
The Forest Resources Program seeks a qualified individual to serve as a Lab Assistant. Lab assistants will assist the primary course instructor in the education of students in the lab experience, preparation of lab supplies for classroom and field, maintaining lab equipment, and other classroom and field support as needed.
- Assist during Forest Resources program course labs under the direction of the primary instructor, answering student questions regarding lab exercises, providing instruction in lab procedures, monitoring of safety during labs requiring use of hand tools or power equipment, administering of lab quizzes, grading of lab quizzes or assignments.
- Assist in development of lab and lecture exercises and curriculum under direction of primary instructor.
- Conduct layout of field lab exercises, checkout and in of equipment as needed. Perform minor maintenance/cleaning of lab equipment in the tool room or field.
- Thorough knowledge in the field of Forest Resource Technology at the technician level.
- Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
- Visual ability, corrected, to enable assistant to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
- Familiarity with tools (both hand and power) that are used in forestry, including but not limited to diameter tape, relaskop/clinometers, increment borer, binoculars/spotting scopes, and chainsaw.
- Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials, audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer-controlled mixed media presentations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Forest Resources Program Director and program staff and faculty on a regular basis.
- Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
- Ability to work with Forestry Program Director, faculty, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.
- Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
- Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Education- High School diploma or GED
- One year of coursework in a Forest Resources Technology or related field.

Preferred Qualifications Education- AAS degree in Forest Resources Technology or related field.
