Job Title: Certified Surgical Technologist – FBC OFNHP Bend

Pay Range: $41.63 - $62.03 per hour

This position is within the OFNHP bargaining unit. Step placement is determined by years of experience. Shift differentials under the OFNHP are currently as follows:
Evening $2.50/hr;
Weekend $4/hr;
Night starting at $10/hr.

Department: Family Birthing Center

Position Overview: The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) functions as a member of the Surgical Services Perioperative Team. The CST performs delegated duties consistent with their scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery. The CST may perform the duties of Scrub Technologist and/or Second Assisting Technologist in accordance with Oregon Law (ORS 676.870). The CST maintains a safe and sterile environment by implementing technical and aseptic practices according to AORN Standards and SCHS policies and procedures.

Practices as a CST while observing the recommendations of AST and their governing organizations. This position does not directly manage other caregivers.

Responsibilities
  • Functions as a member of the Surgical Services Perioperative team to ensure patient care is safe, efficient and cost-effective. Ensures the perioperative regime for each patient is implemented as prescribed by the physician.
  • Prepares the operating room and obtains necessary equipment. Drapes and covers operating and instrument tables; lays out supplies and equipment for scheduled or emergency cases. Assists and procures equipment, checks for malfunctions, and makes needed adjustments.
  • Maintains a sterile environment and follows safety practices to minimize risk of exposure per SCHS policies.
  • Follows established policies for counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments.
  • Participates in Pre-Brief, Time-out, and Debrief of surgical procedures.
  • Assists with patient positioning on the operating table as necessary.
  • Gowns and gloved surgeons and assistants; prepares and drapes sterile field; passes instruments and other supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Prepares sterile dressings and maintains high standards of sterile technique; anticipates the needs of the surgical team and promotes efficient flow of the procedure.
  • Maintains focus on patient care and minimizes distractions during procedures.
  • Performs duties related to specimen care and follows procedures for counts of sponges, sharps and instruments.
  • Participates in cleaning the operating room and breaking down cases, decontamination and sterilization of instruments as required by SCHS policies.
  • When functioning as Second Assist Technologist: holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon, manages sponges or suction at the operative site.
  • Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a timely, efficient and accurate manner and supports learning for patients and families regarding the surgical experience.
  • Performs stand-by call as assigned; varies by department.
  • Supports the organization’s vision, mission, values and Lean continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains a safe environment and upholds professionalism and confidentiality; complies with laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • May perform additional duties of similar complexity as required or assigned.
Education and Certification
  • Education: Required:
    Graduate of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program or military surgical technologist program, or a combination of education and experience. Preferred: N/A.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Required:
    Current NBSTSA Surgical Technologist Certification or current NCCT Surgical Technologist Certification. BLS for Healthcare Providers. Preferred: NBSTSA CSFA (Surgical First Assistant).
Experience
  • Required: N/A
  • Preferred: One (1) year of experience in a high-volume, multi-specialty operating room.
Personal Protective Equipment

Must be able to wear appropriate PPE required to perform the job safely.
