About the job

Masters Swim Coaches lead safe and rewarding swim practices, assisting individuals to achieve their personal fitness goals.

A day in the life

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plans and instructs assigned Masters practices.
  • Plans, organizes and implements curriculum based upon overall program
  • Closely supervises participants to ensure a safe experience.
  • Assists participants in developing and achieving their individual goals.
  • Communicates with staff regarding facility, equipment and supply needs.
  • Sets up, takes down, and cleans up after class as required.
  • Maintains required course records, including attendance.
  • Maintains daily upkeep and care of equipment, supplies, and facilities used.
  • Attends required staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Manages accidents and incidents according to procedures
  • Acts as a Mandatory Reporter; reports incidents of child abuse/neglect.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule

Weekends 9:00AM- 10:30AM and ability to occasionally sub for other practices.

Requirements What you’ll need for success Strong Knowledge of
  • Recreational activity for which providing instruction and/or supervision;
  • Theory, principle and practices for specialized area; and
  • Exercise physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, and current swim fitness, drills, training and techniques.
Skill and Ability to
  • Demonstrate initiative, lead swim practice utilizing a variety of techniques, styles and formats
  • instruct and provide for the needs of a variety of ages and fitness levels
  • Communicate effectively; strong planning, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate a positive, motivating and caring demeanor when teaching
  • Physically perform the duties associated with this position
  • Work cooperatively with others and create a positive
  • Constructive relationship with staff and the general public.
What we’re looking for Education, Experience and Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework or vocations training with emphasis in related field preferred;
    AND
  • Two (2) years of professional level experience in area of specialty;
    OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.
  • Some teaching experience preferred.
  • Preferred certification:
    American Swim Coaches Association Level 1.

    Supervision Received

    Works under the general supervision of Aquatic Coordinator.

    Supervision Exercised

    Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this position; however provides some leadership and direction to assistants and volunteers.

    Working Conditions
    • Depending upon job assignment, duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions.
    • Work schedule generally requires weekday hours with occasional weekends and holidays.
    • Ability to walk and stand for sustained period of time with frequent climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting.
    • The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time.
    • Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling in order to store, set-up, and clean-up equipment and supplies.
    • Exposure to large crowds, uncooperative or difficult individuals, exposure to illness, and periods of continuous demand.
    Selection Process

    Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training and willingness to learn the skills required for the position. An offer of employment is contingent on the verification of credentials and other information required by Bend Park & Recreation District policies, including a background check and a driving history review when driving is required for position.
