Team

The Kinexus Academic/Vocational Services team develops and enhances academic and employability skills for participants interested in gaining an academic secondary credential and/or entry-level employment. Skilled professionals meet participants at their unique skill levels to sharpen the minds of both youth and adults. The team offers services that eliminate barriers to employment while instilling workplace etiquette and industry-specific expectations. This team works with the Business and Talent teams to connect participants to employment opportunities while ensuring completion of employability training.

Outcomes

Our long-term outcomes for the Adult Education ESL Instructor are to support English Language Learners in their pursuit of English Language learning. The instructor will work closely with the Adult Education Team to identify students who need instruction and improvement, provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in basic literacy components leading to English Language acquisition, enroll and assess students as needed, monitor student progress on our online learning platform, assign assessments, and complete data entry and classroom attendance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach ESL courses using instructional methods toward the adult learner in one-on-one, small group, and/or classroom settings.
  • Develop lessons and curriculum based on the learning needs of culturally diverse and multi-skill-level students to increase English language skills.
  • Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods to help students make learning gains.
  • Travel off-site to multiple locations as needed for ESL and GED corrections instruction.
  • Complete and maintain student attendance, records, and ensure timely data entry in accordance with the MAERS User Manual.
  • Provide assistance and support to learners in the learning lab and by connecting them to our online learning platform.
  • Be motivational and inspiring to learners along their educational journey.
  • Stay up-to-date on all documentation for local, state and federal levels.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with learners to support retention efforts.
  • Assist in the development of academic and other resources to enhance the program and adult learner success.
  • Assist with participant outreach efforts to attract English Language Learners.
  • Collaborate with the Michigan Works team to co-enroll students in supportive programs and connect them with employment opportunities.
  • Assist adult education students in pursuit of a GED in a small group, individualized, or corrections education setting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in English/language arts, ESL, or bilingual education OR a bachelor’s degree or higher in English, ESL, linguistics, bilingual education, or a closely related degree, AND a valid Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification.
  • 1+ year of classroom teaching experience.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with literacy programs, testing, and specific needs of adult learners.
  • Strong ability to teach literacy skills in both one-on-one and small group instruction.
