SCOPE OF ROLENew product development at Gast Manufacturing begins with a product definition from the product management team where the specifications of the desired product are clearly outlined. It is the role of the engineer to develop, validate and launch into production a product that meets the requirements of the product definition. Key success metrics are meeting final product cost targets as well as adherence to launch timeline and project budget.
ESSENTIALDUTIES
- Establish Detailed Product Requirements:
Must be able to conceptualize a compressor or vacuum system based on product definition document and input from sales and product management. - Engage in Concept/Prototype Design:
With support of dedicated CAD designer, develop a concept that can be built and tested. This includes material and component selection, pneumatic and electrical design and all associated calculations. - Prototype Assembly and Testing:
Oversee machining and procurement of prototype materials. Participate/oversee the assembly, troubleshooting and validation testing of working prototypes. This includes all electrical and pneumatic components. - Collect, Process and Present Technical Data:
Accurately communicate milestone progress, product performance, project budget and product cost to internal and external stakeholders. - Create a Robust Manufacturing/Assembly Process:
Utilize pilot builds, tooling engineering and manufacturing support staff to implement an efficient, cost effective and robust assembly and end-of-line testing process.
- On time delivery of project milestones.
- Proper execution of all milestone documentation.
- Adherence to the milestone process.
- Proper product validation yielding low post-launch quality issues.
- Maintain high level of trust and engagement with team members.
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from ABET accredited university in Mechanical, Materials, Electrical or Aerospace Engineering.
- Minimum 2 years, preferred 4+ years of functional and HANDS-ON product design and development experience with demonstrated expertise in bringing new products from concept to commercialization.
KNOWLEDGE
- Pneumatic Technical Knowledge:
Knowledge and experience in 1-3 pneumatic/fluid pump technologies (rotary vane, rocking piston, lobe, scroll etc.) - Manufacturing Process Knowledge:
Experienced in 1-2 manufacturing technologies (sand casting, die casting, injection molding, etc.) - Software Knowledge:
Experienced in MS Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Solid Works, Wrike (or equivalent project mgmt. software). - Knowledge of Gast Processes (or Industry Equivalent):
Awareness of general engineering processes. Able to independently utilize milestone/tollgate process, product validation processes, engineering change requests, new model setup documentation, lab/model shop work orders, etc.
- Product Development Skills:
Full Prototype capability (clean sheet design). Troubleshooting all performance, sound, vibration, temperature, or assembly issues. - Calculations:
Bearing life, tolerance stacks, bore, stroke, pump up time, duty cycle, tip angle, compression ratio, eccentric balance, press-fit calcs, production test limits.…
