Materials Engineer II

Salary: $90,000 - $130,000

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with operations team to maintain and/or improve material properties and performance by leveraging data from raw materials, in-process testing and finished material characterization.
  • Develop and maintain complete and accurate written records and process documentation for new and existing products, processes and improvements to existing product and/or processes and serves as a resource for operations and engineering.
  • Drive process efficiency improvement by actively participating in, or leading continuous improvement activities through research, benchmarking and identification of improved methods or tools.
  • Accountable for ensuring desired outcomes are achieved and robust controls are in place.
  • Independently apply accepted material engineering principles to effectively make critical, data-driven decisions to ensure timeliness and quality of ceramic material processing.
  • Oversee manufacturing processes and effectively utilize SPC tools (e.g. control charts, DOE’s, etc.) to maintain and improve product and process quality.
  • Identify root causes, implement effective solutions, improve processes, mentor others in data-driven strategies, and foster innovation through critical thinking and self-reflection.
  • Determine supplier and material specifications, document/implement alternative suppliers as appropriate.
  • Responsible for releasing all raw and finished goods and serve as a resource for handling deviations.
  • Develop/qualify new formulations and raw materials to meet customer (internal/external) requirements and material performance.
  • Actively engage with raw material suppliers to ensure product quality and consistency.
  • Assist internal customers with end customer requirements and material issues.
  • Convey key messages to others across the organization strategically and impactfully while remaining attuned to emotions and responding to feedback.
  • Shape business strategy through advanced analytics, automation, customized reporting/dashboards, and data-driven decision-making while mentoring others and effectively communicating insights to leadership.
  • Project management – lead projects through all phases, from initiation to closing, by defining scope, planning resources, managing teams, ensuring effective communication, and documenting progress and results.
  • Collaborate with other technical resources including R&D.
  • Perform and coach process control and engineering functions.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Ceramics, Materials or other related field.
  • 4+ years of related materials engineering experience working with advanced materials such as carbides, non-oxides, ceramics, and polymers in a manufacturing environment (preferred).
Functional / Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Deep knowledge of general ceramic processing, including particle size reduction, slurry rheology, spray drying, forming methods, sintering and microstructural analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of material characterization and analytic test methods, including particle size/surface area analysis, comminution, powder properties, compaction-shrinkage behavior, chemistry, microstructural evolution and failure analysis.
  • Ability to interpret/analyze test results to improve methodology and performance of ceramic product.
  • In-depth knowledge of data collection systems and ability to improve analysis methods and traceability from raw material to finished parts.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial equipment (preferred).
  • Ability to engage others in change compellingly; proactively manage conflict across different workplace styles, shows genuine interest in others’ perspectives, and creates opportunities to connect with others.
