Performs maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of refrigeration, heating & air-conditioning systems commonly installed in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities. Operates independently with minimal direct supervision. Develops first‑line customer relations and identifies potential sales opportunities.
Responsibilities- Performs prescribed, routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature‑controlled merchandisers.
- Matches customer needs with potential sales opportunities and completes rapid/accurate diagnosis.
- Manages truck inventory, orders, receives, and bills out parts responsibly with minimal waste. Maintains vehicle per company guidelines and performs required maintenance on time.
- Completes necessary documents and electronic communication thoroughly, accurately, professionally, and timely, using handheld devices for paperwork and invoicing.
- Utilizes mirror and flashlight to check all joints, installs PVC drain pipe with minimal supervision, sets and trims cases, installs and adjusts glass doors and frames, uses temperature sensors, brazes and soldered techniques, and determines proper coil layout in complex boxes.
- Accurately identifies pipe size and fittings by sight, performs system refrigerant and oil conversions, tests oil during conversion, and electric welds a variety of metals and joint types.
- Identifies, troubleshoots, and correctly sizes thermostatic expansion valves.
- Works knowledge of pressure regulators, refrigerant flow controls, TEV troubleshooting and replacement, and traces complex schematic diagrams.
- Demonstrates understanding of low/high pressure oil systems, split condensing/low ambient controls, refrigerated equipment startup, EMS controls, CO₂ refrigeration, new retail store refrigeration startup, airflow characteristics and testing, motor VFDs, all system defrost types, recovery setup, torch setup, compressor operating parameters, conventional refrigeration system layout, and parallel rack system layout, and advanced wiring diagrams.
- Shows a working knowledge of gauge, scale, recovery, ECM, shaded pole, PSC, three‑phase motors, compressor operating parameters, oil differential pressure valves and oil level controls.
- Detects and repairs leaks on conventional systems and parallel racks, soldering with copper‑to‑brass and copper‑to‑steel, conducts compressor diagnosis and replacements, troubleshoots and repairs more complex service calls, checks/adjusts oil management system and compressor oil level control.
- Serves as a mentor to other technicians and leads HVAC/R PM programs.
- Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
Formal Education Requirement: High School Diploma/GED
Preferred level: HVAC‑R Technical School Degree
- External Candidates: 7 years in the field or 5 years with Certification from a Technical School
- Internal Candidates: 3 years as a Certified Technician with completion of OJT & Skills Assessment
- Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record per the Fleet Policy.
- Must be physically able to walk distances, bench and crouch, climb ladders, work at high elevations, and lift/carry objects up to fifty pounds repetitively over an extended period.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be detail oriented and highly motivated.
