Job Title
Accounting & Tax Specialist – Berea College
Key Responsibilities- Assist the Controller with specialized accounting and compliance activities, including non‑resident alien, payroll, and accountable plan tax compliance.
- Oversee and manage the Banner Grant Module and Banner Fixed Assets Module, performing routine accounting processes for capital assets.
- Review and approve annual IRS Form 990, 990‑T, 990‑PF, IRS Form 941, state and local payroll tax returns, IRS Form 1042 and 1042‑S.
- Coordinate the annual Retirement Plan Audit and IRS Form 5500 preparation.
- Coordinate the annual Single Audit under Uniform Guidance.
- Assist with hydro infrastructure projects, New Markets Tax Credit program, planned giving administration, and grant reporting.
- Advise management on tax liability implications and identify solutions to complex tax issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Three or more years of substantive accounting experience across a variety of functions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and the ability to build positive working relationships.
- Eagerness to participate in continuing education.
- Proficiency with integrated computerized financial systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical, follow‑up, verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Solid knowledge of non‑profit accounting and related operational issues.
- Understanding of a wide range of business processes (desirable).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Background checks required.
- CPA preferred.
- Ability to navigate campus and public buildings and grounds.
- Sedentary office work.
- Interactive office environment.
- Standard office equipment: computer, fax, phone, etc.
- Calculator.
