Position Overview

The Landing School is seeking an innovative and skilled Composite Boat Building Instructor to lead the next chapter of our renowned Composites Program. In addition to teaching, the instructor will have an opportunity to revamp and modernize a program that prepares students to work confidently with composite materials across a wide range of applications, particularly in boat building, restoration, and repair.

Our 9-month hands‑on program that allows for deep, project‑based learning and close mentorship between faculty and students. The ideal candidate brings both technical mastery and creative energy to modernize curriculum, integrate emerging technologies, and connect traditional craftsmanship with cutting‑edge industry standards.

This position is full-time, Monday – Friday, 8AM
-5PM.

Key Responsibilities

The Composites Instructor, reporting to the Director of Education, will:

  • Revitalize and continuously enhance the Composites curriculum to ensure relevance with current and emerging composite manufacturing techniques.
  • Deliver engaging instruction through lectures, live demonstrations, and hands‑on projects that reflect real‑world applications.
  • Manage the annual student boat build, including:
    • Developing project schedules, milestones, and completion timelines.
    • Creating scantlings, laminate schedules, and bills of materials.
    • Sourcing and coordinating materials with the purchasing agent and vendors.
  • Guide students through fabrication processes such as fiberglass, Kevlar, and carbon fiber layups, infusion, and pre‑preg techniques.
  • Integrate project management, CAD/CAM, and CNC cutting concepts into coursework.
  • Evaluate student learning through practical and theoretical assessments.
  • Promote a culture of safety, craftsmanship, and professional integrity in the shop.
  • Participate in faculty collaboration, staff meetings, student events, and professional development opportunities, including representing The Landing School at boat shows and industry events.
Qualifications
  • Minimum associate degree (Bachelor’s preferred).
  • Minimum four years of professional experience working with modern composite materials (fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber, and resin systems including polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy).
  • Proven expertise in open and closed‑molding methods, including wet layup, infusion, and pre‑preg.
  • Experience in yacht construction and repair.
  • Familiarity with CAD design, CAM programming, and CNC operations.
  • Strong background in product design, laminate specification, and structural analysis.
  • Prior teaching or mentoring experience preferred, instructional training available for the right candidate.
  • Strong communication skills and a student‑centered approach to teaching and learning.
