Position Overview

Position title: Extension Instructor Assistant (Non‑Senate, Non‑Tenure Track)
Salary range: $3,500 to $4,000 per course (determined by course length, units, enrollment, budget, etc.)
Percent time: Part‑time, agreed on a course‑by‑course basis.
Anticipated start: Mid‑August for fall term, mid‑January for spring term.
Review timeline: Applications reviewed for fall in June‑July and for spring in October‑November; will be considered as needs arise. The pool remains in place for 8‑9 months; candidates wishing to stay after the advertised closing date must reapply.
Position duration: Courses range 3 to 16 weeks; additional agreements may be assigned based on program needs, meritorious performance, and funding availability.

UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX) is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. It builds bridges between UC Berkeley and the public since 1891, serving thousands of people each year to extend research, scholarship, and provide access to higher education for non‑traditional, online, and international students while improving the workforce. UNEX is part of a division under the Dean of Extended Education that includes Berkeley Summer Sessions, Berkeley Study Abroad, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

General Duties

The Extension Instructor Assistant does not perform teaching duties but provides support to the primary instructor. Specific duties may include a subset of the following.

Assist Primary Instructor With
  • Course preparation, including materials, student groups, and learning management system setup.
  • Grading and providing feedback on assignments, projects, papers, and examinations.
  • Facilitating group work, activities, or breakout discussions.
  • Monitoring online course activity and the student discussion forum; may answer routine student emails/questions.
  • Providing individual or group tutoring to students.
  • Summarizing and escalating complex student questions/issues to the primary instructor.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree)
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a related content area.
  • Ability to reliably commute to Berkeley, California, U.S.A. once or twice a week for classes that are 1.5–3 hours long during weekdays (Monday‑Thursday between 9 am and 7 pm Pacific Time).
  • U.S.A. residency and work authorization; no visa sponsorship provided.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in the course subject area.
  • Two or more years of professional experience in the course subject.
  • Understanding of the business, innovation, and entrepreneurship environment (2+ years).
  • Teaching, training, mentoring, or tutoring experience in the course subject.
  • Ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.
  • Ability to support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy.
  • Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn instructional and other technology such as Canvas, Zoom, Google tools, etc.
