Residential Director (Temporary)

The University of California, Berkeley seeks a Resident Director for our Pre-College Scholars Residential Program (June 7 – August 14). The role focuses on community development, residential education, safety, and administrative support for high school students in both halls.

Overview

The Pre-College Scholars Program offers domestic and international high school students summer educational experiences on Berkeley campus. Residents advance the campus curriculum, engage in extracurricular activities, and participate in workshops. This position ensures resident well‑being, program compliance, and community integration.

Responsibilities
  • Model leadership and engage in Pre‑College Scholar activities, encouraging staff and residents to participate.
  • Maintain awareness of resident issues, particularly concerns of underrepresented populations.
  • Serve as a campus resource by providing guidance in planning programs, activities, and events.
  • Support and supervise RAMs & ARDs through resources, feedback, and collaborative planning.
  • Collaborate with ARDs to design and promote community building activities among residents.
  • Display appreciation of differences and assist students in developing an understanding of diverse cultures and lifestyles.
  • Act as a mediator in conflict situations using restorative justice practices.
  • Facilitate a supportive working relationship with the residential team & building staff.
  • Maintain consistent presence and hours in residence halls.
  • Attend staff & pod events; support leading all hall meetings.
  • Be welcoming and supportive during student arrival and departure.
  • Coordinate & participate in Pre‑College wide events as assigned.
  • Facilitate staff activities for training and team building.
  • Establish and monitor structure for weekly programming, expense tracking, inventory, and compliance with departmental standards.
  • Support residential maintenance and accountability through community building activities.
  • Help resolve resident problems and basic conflicts; refer serious matters to a Student Life and Development professional.
  • Use student development theories to promote individual and community responsibility.
  • Assist students with academic and personal concerns; refer when necessary.
  • Develop and implement strategies to address developmental needs of specific populations.
  • Maintain positive relationships with residents and staff that encourage communication and mutual respect.
  • Encourage a living/learning environment through academic integration activities and campus partner programs.
  • Assist with emergency response protocol and follow‑up for missing or tardy students.
  • Address incidents of inappropriate behavior using restorative and developmental approaches.
  • Effectively resolve student misconduct cases within a restorative framework.
  • Participate in disaster response preparedness and assist residents if emergencies occur.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor safety response to fire, earthquake, and other safety incidents.
  • Serve on staff on‑call rotation; accompany program participants to urgent care or hospital.
  • Assist in directing summer staff for timely reporting to appropriate staff.
  • Participate in daily and weekend duty coverage; share holiday duty responsibilities.
  • Attend and participate in weekly Residential Leadership Team Health & Safety Meeting.
  • Manage psychological, emotional, medical, or safety related emergencies.
  • Create Incident Reports and consult with professional staff on conduct action.
  • Model good COVID‑19 health and safety behavior and enforce campus requirements.
  • Respond to student behavior that violates campus and program policies.
  • Coordinate & administer the Residential Life Program under supervision of a Residential Operations Admin.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the University and Pre‑College Scholars Program staff.
  • Complete assigned projects, reports, and inventories as directed.
  • Attend and participate in staff development activities and training.
  • Attend mandatory staff training and lead select training as requested by Professional staff.
  • Review and report changes in housing rosters and communicate inconsistencies to operations staff.
