Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus‑affiliated community members. In addition to 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state‑of‑the‑art equipment.

Position Summary

The UC Martial Arts Program (UCMAP), under the Department of Recreational Sports, has more than 20 staff members and coaches and operates six different martial arts clubs. These clubs include over 500 student‑athletes who participate in various sports programs and compete at the U.S. National Collegiate Championships annually. We are currently seeking an Assistant Coach/Coordinating Instructor for the Taekwondo club.

Martial Arts Instructors in Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Taichi, Wushu, and Yongmudo are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Martial Arts Club under UCMAP. This includes teaching and managing student‑athletes, recruiting, coaching, and developing objectives and strategies for a successful program.

Responsibilities
  • Teach martial arts trainings at practices and competitive events.
  • Build a nationally competitive martial arts team through successful recruiting and retention of high‑level student‑athletes.
  • Collaborate with Athletic Trainers, Assistant Coaches, and Strength and Conditioning Coaches to design academic‑year (in‑season and out‑of‑season) and summer conditioning programs.
  • Propose budgets, reconcile expenses, and propose purchases for the sports program.
  • Operate the program within approved budget guidelines.
  • Participate in donor meetings and events, and in public relations activities, while monitoring individual and team academic performance to ensure academic requirements are met.
  • Serve as key liaison to the broader UC Martial Arts Program community, engaging in alumni, fundraising and other key stakeholder activities.
  • May work in youth camps, fitness, and outdoor programs.
Required Qualifications
  • Recognized expert in teaching and coaching with a minimum of 10 years of teaching or coaching experience.
  • Supervisory and leadership skill to mentor and develop assistant coaching or program instructional staff.
  • Highly advanced and effective interpersonal, motivational, and team leadership skills.
  • Maintain current rules and regulations of martial‑arts competition by the NGB or ISF.
  • Martial‑arts rank certification of minimum 4th Dan or equivalent experience.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in English, active listening, critical thinking, multi‑tasking, time management, and dynamic flexibility in adapting to client needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification to instruct in the applicable martial‑arts rank certification or equivalent experience.
