Overview
UC Berkeley Extension invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors in Mathematics and Statistics to teach online courses for our Sciences, Mathematics, and Biotechnology department. This is an instructor pool for online courses offered through UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX).
Position OverviewPosition type:
Part-time by agreement on a per-course basis. Salary varies by course format and length. For synchronous Live Online courses, compensation ranges approximately from $3,250 to $6,000 total per course. For asynchronous Start Anytime Online courses, compensation ranges from $160 to $180 per final student course grade submitted each month, with total estimates from $2,560 to $18,000 per course; monthly payments typically begin within 6 months after the course start date.
Compensation depends on course length, units, enrollment, budget, and other factors.

Applicants are considered for needs as they arise; this pool does not guarantee a position. The pool remains in place for 9–12 months; those interested in remaining beyond the closing date must reapply. Position duration varies by course; fall/spring typically 7–17 weeks, summer typically 8 weeks, asynchronous Start Anytime courses typically 6–18 months.

UNEX serves the professional and continuing education goals of thousands of people each year and supports UC Berkeley’s mission to extend research and scholarship to a global community, increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online, and international students, and improve the workforce. UNEX seeks qualified, dynamic instructors with a commitment to undergraduate, professional, and continuing education in Mathematics and Statistics to teach online courses each year for our Sciences, Mathematics, and Biotechnology department.
HowCourses Are Offered
- Online instruction is delivered asynchronously through the learning management system (Canvas) or through synchronous live lectures (Zoom).
- Most synchronous live online courses are offered in the evening and on weekends (USA Pacific Time).

The department seeks candidates who can support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Duties vary by instruction method:
- For synchronous instruction (live online courses): syllabus development; assignment development; lesson planning; preparing and submitting required texts and course materials; updating Canvas course site; delivering lectures, presentations, and learning activities for all required hours of instruction.
- For asynchronous instruction (start anytime online courses): review syllabus and content; use Canvas tools; request training needs from the Program Director or Department Director.
- For all instruction: complete required trainings; respond to student questions; grade and post final grades; utilize Canvas, Zoom, Google Workspace, and other approved platforms; follow department policies and guidelines; respond to other requests from leadership in a timely manner.
