Join to apply for the Mechanical Design Engineer, Quantum Compute Hardware Systems role at Rigetti Computing
AboutThe Role
Rigetti Computing is pioneering the development of scalable quantum computers. We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to contribute to the design and integration of advanced hardware systems that enable the next generation of quantum computing platforms. In this role, you’ll support the design, modeling, and testing of mechanical components and assemblies that operate from room temperature down to millikelvin environments.
You’ll work closely with senior engineers, physicists, and systems teams to develop precision mechanical solutions that ensure the performance and reliability of our quantum hardware. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated engineer to grow in a multidisciplinary environment, working at the intersection of mechanical design, cryogenics, and quantum technology.
- Mechanical Design & Prototyping:
- Design of mechanical components and subsystems, including cryostat assemblies, enclosures, and signal chain hardware.
- Develop and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Support design reviews, tolerance analyses, and documentation of mechanical interfaces.
- Collaborate with senior engineers on thermal and mechanical design challenges in cryogenic environments.
- Participate in lab activities, including prototype assembly, testing, and validation.
- Collaboration & Documentation:
- Work cross-functionally with hardware, cryo, RF, and systems teams.
- Maintain clear design documentation, version control, and traceability within the PLM system.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and lab workflow.
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 3+ years of relevant industry or academic experience (internships, co‑ops, or project‑based).
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Solid Works preferred).
- Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, GD&T, and basic tolerance analysis.
- Familiarity with materials and mechanical systems operating in thermal or vacuum environments.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Experience with design documentation, revision control, and PLM tools.
- Exposure to thermal or structural simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL).
- Experience with hands‑on prototyping, machining, or assembly.
- Interest in cryogenic systems, precision hardware, or RF/electronic packaging.
$120,000 - $150,000 a year
