Departmental OverviewUC Berkeley’s University Health Services offers comprehensive medical care, counseling, and health promotion programs. Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually, including primary care, urgent care, occupational health, and specialty clinics.

Phlebotomy and Processing:
- Greets and assists patients kindly.
- Interprets clinician orders, secures requisitions, and performs tests.
- Prepares tubes and media for specimen collection and confirms patient compliance.
- Performs phlebotomy accurately and with minimal discomfort.
- Documents specimen collection times and alerts response team to adverse events.
- Prepares samples for testing and reference lab send‑outs.
- May assist with finger sticks, veni‑puncture, and blood cultures in other clinical areas.
- Adheres to departmental policies and reports discrepancies.
Clerical and Support:
- Communicates effectively with clinicians and staff via calls, faxes, and email.
- Performs key entry of patient data and generates laboratory reports.
- Maintains equipment and ensures supply levels.
- Confirms laboratory pick‑ups and adjusts pick‑ups as needed.
Other Duties:
- Restocks supplies and maintains a clean work area.
- Participates in staff meetings, huddles, and committees.
- Assists with inspection preparation and regulatory visits.
Testing:
- Operates automated analyzers and performs tests under CLS supervision.
Education: Certified Phlebotomist by the State of California with a high school diploma. Must perform venous and/or skin punctures on adults and pediatric patients.
Licenses/Certifications: Current California phlebotomy certification.

At least one year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
Salary & BenefitsThe hourly range is $28.62 – $32.84, Steps 1–8. The position is full‑time, non‑exempt, and eligible for full UC benefits.
- Full‑time (40 hours per week).
- Paid bi‑weekly.
